Exhaust system and HP?

Hi there-
I'm new to this site and this is my first post. I have a '01 4runner SR5 and want to do some modifications. I was wondering about your suggestions on a new exhaust system for the car. Its a V6, 3.4L. I'm looking for something that has the sound of a V8, but is not LOUD and annoying to others around me. Which brand do you prefer and how many HP do they give you? The TRD systems any good? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
David

Hi and Welcome to the forums!

To be honest, there really isn't anything that is going to make your Japanese V6 sound like a V8. Jason B., who is one of the moderators here has an exhaust system that is probably closest to what you are looking for. Here's his website. You can see vids and hear sounds of his exhaust system.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi David, and welcome too Yotatech.

See the link to "YotaTech on the web" on the main index page here, and then look for an exhaust comparison that I have been putting together over the last year.

It has many sound bytes and vids on it to give you an idea of various exhaust setups.

Hey man... Welcome,

Just today I had my old exhaust axed just aft of the o2 senser and replaced it with 2.5" cat, pipe and a 2 chamber Flowmaster! Man I swear that it sounds just like my friends 5.0!!! I guess that when you think about it the 5.0 is pushing 2.5L through each pipe and Im pushing 3.0L through mine with a small tip its not as ratty, but its nice! I had them mount it as far back as they could so that the bed of the truck would save me from the sound on the highway, and I guess it worked! I can hear more of the engine at 3000rpm than I can of the exhaust! But the idle is felt outside the truck and at 2K theres my 5.0! I payed to much, but I think that Summit has them for $72ea (I think)! Ill send a link.

hope that helped

_travis

you'll have to go to the online catalog and hunt for flowmaster mufflers Summit

dhancalim, weclome to the board!

I would have to say my exhaust does sounds very V8ish!

On my site in the "pics &vids" section, you will find many sound files for your listening pleasure.

Welcome aboard from another board newbie!
I have an '85 4Runner with a slightly tweaked 22re, headers, K&N filter charger, free flow cat and chambered muffler all on 2 1/4" pipe. The results? NOISE! I confess I kinda like the VROOM, but it really does get old. If you can do it, I personally would recommend doing what you can to get as much air in and out of the motor as you can (while still retaining the necessary backpressure) without making it loud(er). It's fun at first, but it does tend to wear on you

thank you for all your suggestions so far. I heard the Flowmaster 40 and it sounds nice, but I've been viewing the other threads about the cons of this at 2500-3000 RPM(specifically the noise issue). Is there any brand that will just improve my acceleration without making all the loud noises described so far? Anyone have the TRDw/the Borla Cat back? How is this?
Thanks
David

I have the TRD cat-back. I love it. It has the "lub-lub" sound that I was looking for. It sounds especially good in tunnels and overpasses.

Hindsight being 20/20, I would have had a muffler shop make an exhaust system using a Borla muffler. I paid $550 for the TRD, a local shop would have charged me only $350 including the muffler. Oh well.

Unfortunately, I do not have any sound clips as I don't have the ability to record them.

Haveblue-
For your borla/TRD, how is the noise when you are driving on the highway. Not too loud like the Flowmaster 40 or 50?
Thanks

I have a Jardine system on my truck. I took off the tip and it quieted down the system and elimnated any drone whatsoever. The tip on an exhaust system is going to make a big difference in the overall tone and resonance in the cabin. Since the tip on the Jardine is a bolt-on affair, it is not really even necessary to install it in the first place.

I really like my Jardine and when I installed it, I noticed a really nice performance gain all throughout the rev range.

Hope this helps.
