Dummy Light came on!!!!

Hey guys,
Finally got my tranny rebuilt. What a long story that would be.... anyways a month after I take it in I get it back. Hubby went to AZ to pick it up and it drove like a brand new truck!!! I was so happy... but on the way home (to Cali.) his Check Engine light came on. He pulled over and checked every fluid level there is to check and everything was fine. It wasn't hot or overheating. Had plenty of gas. Just came on and wont shut off.... Anyone got any ideas as to why it came on? SHOOT if it ain't one thing it is another!!!!

Thanks all!!

Most of the time, the check engine light does not have anything to do with the transmission.

You really need to get the code and see what it's saying. Short circuit the check connector and count the number of flashes, two of them, one is slower, one is faster. combine them then post here...we will try to help you out.

Good luck,

Nam

If it's an auto then the O/D light will flash if there is a problem with the tranny. Try pulling the trouble codes stored in the computer and that will pinpoint the area that is causing the trouble.

Ok thank you guys,
I will go down tomm. morning and try to rent a tester. After I get it I will let you know the codes, since I will have absolutely NO idea what they mean. I don't know how to short circuit the check connector so I think I will just rent the tester. Shoot my luck I would try and short circuit it and my poor baby would blow up.

if yours id ODBI, then short circuit the check connector is the most easy way to do it. If you like, I can try to post some diagrams available for your year model, what year is it?

Since I don't own one so I can't take actual picture of it...try the search and see if this has been posted before. Peharps, someone with 2nd Gen. can help you better.

Good luck,

Nam

the cel is normally attributed to a problem with the emission control systems..... for a long drive, im automatically thinking o2 sensors...

Thank you guys,

My dad and husband did the short circiut thing a while ago but my dad was the one who put the "paperclip" on the two connectors and I am not sure if my husband was watching or not. I am going to go down this morning and see if I can't get someone at Kragen to do it for me with one of those testers.

Hey Jim,
What does the o2 sensor do? Is it something that needs to be fixed if it comes up on the tester? If so what do they fix? And where can I get it fixed, other then the dealer of course.

You guys have been most helpful I really appreciate it alot!!

I'm not an expert but here is what I know (I think!)....

O2 Sensor is an Oxygen Sensor. It regulates the amount of oxygen in the fuel and is for emmissions. I'd only replace it when I'd have to pass inspection (unless you saw your MPG really go down). I know they cost at least $100 - much more if you go to the dealer. Anyone can replace it for you.

Take the truck to autozone, they will pull the codes from the computer directly and then you will know exactly what the problem is. Post that here and then we can help you. It is a shot in the dark without more info though.

But i also agree that it could be O2 sensors. But you can get an O2 sensor for a lot less then $100. I got one for my car just a month ago brand new for $35 from pepboys. easy to change out as well, just spend the $10 and get the right tool for it, makes it a lot easier.
