Ken Hanna already built a Yota w/ Hummer H1 portals. FZJ80 w/ 37's, central air (air up/dwn on the go), Fox remote res. shocks, bobbed fr/rr winches, and the most amazing fabrication I've ever seen. Built for jungle racing in Malaysia, It's awesome.

Here it is, not quite finished

Awesome! I can't tell, but I hope he has a back window for jungle treks, I bet the bugs are nasty.

why do you say toyota's torsion bars suck?

in general, i like torsion bars--as long as the are connected to the upper control arm.

and you will definitely get people disagreeing with you if you try to say that toyota's post 1995 IFS (coils) is as strong as the pre-95 (t-bars) IFS (especially if you factor in the switch from recirculated ball steering to rack and pinion steering that went along with the redesign of the front end.)

the post-95 IFS might be better on the road, and you might get an extra inch of travel out of it (not really sure if that is true), but i don't think it is as strong (and the steering setup is certainly not as good for offroad).

personally, i'll give up the better on road performance (and extra inch of travel) in exchange for being able to beat it harder without it breaking and having a steering setup that is designed for offroad use rather than for a car.

Not that I think Post 95'2 are bad at all, but I think the torsion setups can do well.

If setup correctly they can perform very nicely. As long as you don't incorrectly index the spline or strip the adjuster bolts...I feel it is pretty safe setup (Hey the frame even protects it)). A well setup torsion truck(Just like a Coil Susp.), can offer a great ride and articulation.

Simple solutions are the BJ spacer, disconnects, and lo pro stops. I have been impressed with this stuff over the last few years.

Or you can go long travel. Hell I have 12" of travel. Slow or fast that helps out.
All yotas are good yotas.

The steering is crap.

The joints are marginal.

Torsion bars are decent.

Vertical wheel travel is not the sole measure of worth.

Extreme trucks are solid.

Time after time, on the hard trails out west, my friends with coilover IFS beat the piss out of my torsion bar IFS that is broke.

For starters, torsion bars aren't designed for serious offroading, the steering sucks big time. Idler arms break, as well as links.

I've never had any problems with my riack and pinion steering.

Yeah it's got like 18" of travel, billet alloys, 8" lift, 16" ground clearance under the diff housing (lowest point). and of course, fully locked.

The portals are great, not only for clearance, but the 2:1 at the hubs means the drivetrain only sees half the stress of the wheels (meaning a 40" tire feels like a 20" to the drivetrain) and the central, on-the-run inflation/deflation means you can air down for a tough obstacle and then air up for a fast dirt road without ever stopping.

It would make a perfect rockcrawler too

It's still being worked on but looks like such a beast. The welding is impressive, the cage is done beautifully as is all the metal work.

It's called the Ultimate 80, and it really is!

IFS. good for two things....the road and goin FAST off road (baja, dakar, ect.). they really don't use them in prof. rock crawling b/c of breakage. why do you think walker evans in is full IFS S-10 went back to D60's front and rear. ease of use and pure brute strenght. there is just too much that has to go into making an IFS system strong enough to take the abuse of off roadin. don't get me wrong...i love IFS....but not on my trail rig or anything i'm going to wheel in.

Again, I think the point of the initial topic is that IFS takes too much heat.

We're not all building comp. rockcrawlers. If that were the case we'd all have SA's.

ifs does take too much heat. especially seeing as how ive been through things that my buddy in his jeep gets his SFA hung up on. not to "bash" his driving skills or anything, it was just i slid over it and his axle dug in. theres pro's and con's to everything...and i dont think theres enough con's to ifs to make me wana do a sas.
