All,

I blew the lighter on 96 4runner running portable air pump.

I did some reading and it seems that fusible link needs replacing.

Some advice is controversial, so I have 2 questions

1. Can I take the lighter out w/o removing the dash?
(somebody suggested turning it 180 degrees or something like that)

2. What's the best way to fix it? Does it need soldering? Replace with new wire?
May be when I look at it I'll have better idea how to fix it...

I couldn't find write-ups by Corey or anybody else on that...

I just checked with dealer - they want $50CAD for a lighter.

The center dash piece is easy to pull, just don't break the tabs. Just carefully pry it out with a screwdriver, then you'll be able to see the back of the cig lighter. I'm not sure if it will slide out without removing the dash.

..did you check the actual fuse first? it right in your drivers side kick panel

Check fuse.

If its not blown, you can do some inspecting.

Open your center console armrest. Pull up on the plastic peice surrounding your e-brake. Next, pull off the plastic that goes around the shifter. Next, take off the climate controls, and pry off easily with a flathead the climate control backing. You'll see two screws, undo those, and you're done. There should be a writeup in the tech section on how to do this (to replace a stereo).

I'm sure it just twists out from the back. There is a connection back there too. Not sure what it could be though. You should buy a volt meter and see if you're getting any voltage and/or current to those wires though.
