Brake problems

I had been out of the country and didnt get a chance to get regular maint done on my breaks. I took it in to see what needed to be done and here is what they said needs to take place.

Machine the rotors and drums:

Calipers Recond all 4:

Return springs for the rear:

Disc Hardware? for the front:

Brake shoes:

Wheel cylinders: they said they were sticking


They wanted to charge me about 500 bucks to do all of this, but that sounds a little expensive for parts cause they arent doing much labor. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions of maybe somewhere i can pick up some parts?

"Calipers Recond all 4". Where's he going to find the other 2 calipers, assuming you have drums on the rear you only have 2 calipers. Forget machining the rotors, just replace them. Lots of places to get the parts, search online or go to Autozone or whatever.

Thanks so far, has helped alot. OK, a newbie question. If the breakshoes cost 75 dollars and the core price is 50, does that mean i pay 125 until i return the old breakshoes? Or does it mean pay the 75 and get 50 back when i return the cores?

Disc pads: $40
Brake Shoes:$60
Front Rotors:$65
Wheel Cylinder:$30
Return Springs"$20
Drums:$80
Calipers: $50
Total $345


What do you guys think about these prices, found them online? I think they look pretty good but i havent looked before.


Also, how hard would it be to replace these parts myself, i have an uncle that has a shop and would be wiling to help me.

It is not that hard to do

just make sure to bleed the system real well when done also have a rubber mallot to get the rear drums off and release the tensioner alot on the rear shoes.
I rebuilt my calipers about a month ago it was easy and cheaper for me but it did take more time and the pistons on mine where very clean and that helped,
and i also got all the gunk out of the calipers & brake lines.

this may sound a bit crazy but i would bleed out the brake lines first then change the calipers then bleed them again to remove any possable air this makes sure that you have clean brake fluid in the lines before changing the calipers = less problems down the road.

what mileage? these components should be looked at each time the brakes are serviced and inspected during tire rotation/replacement.
what can you do yourself? none of this is difficult to do.
are the prices you listed for the caliper seals? if they are not obviuosly leaking they should be OK (definetley look close) use brake grease on the front calipers
springs generally dont need replacing, unless they broke or shot across the floor into oblivion.
RR drums can be turned (w/in spec) off the truck for $10-20ea

Also, I'd get a second opinion. I was out of country for a year and my brakes were fine when I returned. They might have jsut been trying to upsell you...
