arghh 295's and endless rubbing...

what i have: SS#1 lift, 1"bl and GX470 17" rims 295/70r17 with 1.5" spacers...

ok, i trimmed a bunch and banged the pinch welds a little and didnt have any rubbing issues on my last trip. well i went out today and the rubbing is back and worse.... I am going to have to cut the pinch weld and reweld it back flat.
Now my question... I am rubbing on the back of the body behind the rear wheels. I take the bumper end caps off and didnt have any issues last time i was out, but this time, it was brutal... Could something have shifted? it was nowhere near rubbing before, could not airing down have made the tires like 2" larger? there was also some wicked metal on metal rubbing somewhere back there. im going to have to crawl under there tomorrow after i hit the car wash. im hoping that it wasnt the driveshaft hitting the gas tank...

im about ready to go crazy... I can handle the frame and skids and sliders hitting, but the tires rubbing is not cool.

did you have the bumper extensions on this last time you went out? i noticed that i somtimes rub the bolts that hold the mud flaps on , also somtimes i rub the gas pipe cover when fully stuffed. i put the 99 4wd coils on in the rear and it solved most of my problems. good luck

no, i took the whole rear bumper sides off. the only part i left on was the middle big chrome piece in the rear.

Is that lift essentially the same as the orignial Tundra/OME lift? About 2-2.5" in front and around the same in the back?

If so I don't know why you'd be rubbing at all.

What is the backspacing on the GX rims?

yes, its the full OEM, no old man emu,

4.75(?) same as the sequoia wheels, and a 1.5 spacer

You are experiencing normal rubbing with that large of a tire. Get rid of the pinch weld in the front and trim the fenders and flares. Here's what mine looks like and it still rubs slightly with 315's.



The metal on metal is probably the gas tank skid meeting the driveshaft. You probably broke the zerk fitting off. And yes, if you didn't air down you will rub more.

i am rubbing in the back alot, below the flairs on the actual body, i am not sure how to go about trimming the rear 1/4 panel, the front is well documented, but i have never seen the rear trimmed before. at least not on the back side.

oh, and yes, the metal on metal was the drive shaft contacting the gas tank skid in 3 spots, and yes the zerk is gone.

I trimmed my rear pinch weld back about 1/2". But that was to run 315's, it was not necessary when running 295's aired down. I would bet if you air down you won't rub there.

If so, you can trim this back about 1/2" without needing to weld it shut. I just trimmed it, smoothed the edge and sprayed rubberized undercoating to seal the end shut.

ok cool. thanks jim.
what i am thinking of doing is putting a set of 315's on from a friend that has them on his 80 series and then trimming accordingly, so that if i upgrade, i will only be trimming once.

i dont hit anywhere else in the back, except on the gas filler tube cover, and it is very slight.

i am not in the habit of airing down yet, we didnt have any onboard air and were too gun-hoe to stop and let air out before hitting the trails.
