To any of you thinking about an oversized aftermarket intake on a 3.4
Consider against it. I had one on my taco for a few mo's and detonation became a problem that only 89 octane fixed. I thought I had cured the problem a few days ago when I got a CE light about the truck running lean and a Bank#1 misfire.
Since it was overdue(im sure the previous owner didnt do the plugs at 30k) i did my 60k mile service early and changed my plugs to some new ngk's and some new wires. Well it appeared that solved the detonation but it didnt. I also noticed when playing with the throttle cable underhood when first given gas the motor would choke then rev up instead of being smooth. This made me wonder because the few times I got on it since the intake install it seemed to bog then haul arse which I chalked up as normal because I had only had the truck a week before the intake went on.
As an experiment and after reading alot on detonation and what created a lean condition, I reinstalled the stock 2001 intake and modified the front of the airbox kinda like a deckplate mod. Detonation is gone completely on 87 octane, and the same action with the throttle produces power instantly across the rpm range with no hesitation.
Now after driving it a few days with the stock intake on it feels like I put an aftermarket intake on it. Must have been since I changed it so early i didnt actually notice a performance loss but now with the stock back on it runs better.
Just figured this would be an interesting post for anyone considering an aftermarket intake, granted my results might not be the same as everyone else's but it never hurts to post the facts.
Does anyone think that maybe the taco intake is perfect for the motor unlike so many other stock intakes and I actually was introducing too much air to the motor with the large 3" intake?

Interesting theory, but I'd doubt it... If I'm right, the 3.4's are OBD II compliant. That said, whatever gains in airflow you received (which had to be minimal, maybe 2-5% or so) would have been offset by the programming the in EFI ECU.... in theory. But then again, maybe the 3.4 isn't as adaptive as I and/or Toyota had hoped. But still, I ran a 2nd gen S/C and an open air intake and then a snorkle on my old 3rd gen w/o issues of detonation or pinging.... but then again, I always ran 93 octane or higher.. hmmm.

So Elway, what you are saying is that the deckplate (similar) mod works? C'mon man, we could of told you that a long time ago!
The 3.4 is definitely not starved for air. But, just the right amount seems to help.
I am a little confused by your post. Did you go back to stock completely, or did you actually cut the front of the airbox out?

Yeah, I shoulda tried the cheaper alternative first. When I put the oem intake back in i decided to go ahead and dremel out the front as I had done with vehicles in the past and hooked it all back up proper.

I believe the problem lies more with how the air moves over the mass airflow sensor than the total airflow going in the motor. I have a friend who works at a dealership and they've had trouble with some aftermarket air filter assmeblies when the were close to the maf.

When you say bigger intake, are you talking about the air inlet tube? I have never seen an aftermarket intake for a 3.4. Probably a dumb question, just want to clarify.

Did you reset your ecu when you put on the new filter? Supposedly the ecu needs to re-learn the A/F map when you do a mod like this. I did so when I did my deckplate mod...
