99 4Runner 3.4l V6 fuel gauge not reading properly
I have a 99 Toyota 4Runner V6. My fuel gauge hasn't worked properly since I bought it. She mostly reads full all the time , but sometimes when I fill up it reads empty & the low fuel light comes on. Just wondering if there is anything I can do or check before I look into buying a new sending unit, droping my tank & installing the new one. Appreciate any help & thanks in advance.

There is alot of information on here and on the web regarding this. It is a known issue and I believe Toyota has a bulletin out on it. I think toyota recommends to replace the gauge cluster as well as the sending unit. Mine is the same way, but for me it is not worth the hassle and the money, I just make sure to reset my trip meter when I fill up.

That doesn't sound like the typical fuel gauge issue which I recall to be a sudden large drop in the fuel reading to like 3/4 tank after only a few miles after fill up and of course the inability to put more than 15 or so galons into the 17 gallon tank.
Regardless, your issues are problaby due to the same faulty pickup/sender and gauge and the remedy will be the same. It's not exactly an easy fix either.

If you fill up, and the E light is on, then you have a bad sending unit. I have dropped my tank on my T4R and it took me about 4 Hrs to do it when it was empty (about .5 gal left) and I replaced all the little valves on top (the 2001-02s have the ORVR valve on top the gas tank). I thought about replacing my sending unit, then found out it was deep inside the tank (and it stretched from one side of the tank to the other). I was told by the stealer that in order to replace it, I would have to tear apart the gas tank (in half). Mine was working so I didn't worry about it. I don't know how your 99' is, but that was my experience.
