98 2.7l Ticking Upon Startup in cold?!?
Well today in kansas it was a cold morning, but not even the coldest yet however, I went out to start my truck and upon starting it it sounded like rod knock or lifter tick and lasted about 5 seconds then diminished. I've never heard my truck do this before and it only has about 79k on the odometer. What could be going on?

Cold weather.
This is normal as far as I'm concerned. I spend alot of my winters snowboarding in north-western NY where the nighttime temperatures commonly drop below zero. There is nothing that keeps my lifters from ticking. The best thing is to run a slightly lighter viscosity oil during the colder winter months. I run 5w30 instead of 10w30. This seems to help a tad. I've read that the OEM toyota oil filters also help negate this ticking problem in cold weather. Rumor has it that FRAM filters make initial startup lifter noise worse. My 2 cents.

never, never, NEVER use fram filters. they don't have an anti-drainback valve which lets your engine run without oil when starting. sounds like what you hear is your timing chain slapping around because the tensioner has no oil pressure

i would have to agree with kyle, the 2.7 uses solid lifters so there no reason for them to make noise, but i have heard cases of piston slap happening on some 2.7's, i let mine sit for about a week when i was out of town and it made a rattle/knock when i started it, i believe that the chain tensioner bled down after sitting for a week and the chain was a little loose until the oil pressure built up, but if yours does this daily i would look into it

Hey guys thanks a ton for the replies, i'm running 5w30 mobile 1 w/a puralator filter on it. So is it normal and ok for it to make this noise? this is the first time ever so hopefully it isn't going to become a problem. Should I take it in or anything or check anything?

just make sure the oil is at the proper level... whats happening is that the oil is thickening due to the cold, and its not allowing it to flow into the places it needs to be on startup... there really is no cure, unless you want to install a block/oil heater, that would help out a good deal, aslo maybe a pre-lube system like racecars use, but those are very spendy...

On the very coldest of mornings, the 2.7L in my '96 ticks for a few seconds..
One day I'm in the Stealer buying some misc. parts when I walk over to the Service Dept. and inquiry of the ticking. The Service Manager replied, "It's your fuel injectors.."
I rolled my eyes (as I walked away) and mumbled back, "I'd bet anything that it has something to do with the oil or oil pressure..
