'96 Anti-Lock Sticking

I've got a '96 4Runner that has been having some brake problems.
If the anti lock engages, the brakes bind.
And I don't mean a little bit.
First time it happened, I was able to do some bleeding and they eased up.
Last time, I stomped on the brake pedal out of frustration, and they eased up.
The Anti-lock unit on these trucks is not cheap on these trucks, as you can imagine.
I've also considered doing away with it, and getting a distribution/metering block (valve) out of summit, or something like that.

Anyone heard of this before?
Any responses will be appreciated.

So if you brake normally, no issues, but if you brake hard enough to engage ABS, the wheels are locked up afterward?

Almost certainly a gunked up ABS modulator/valve body. If you bleed the fluid, is it pretty murky? It's a good practice to flush fluid until clean comes out every 3 or 4 years, the fluid absorbs moisture from the air and will gradually (in addition to lowering the boiling point considerably) become corrosive and start eating the brake system from the inside out.

Correct.
When I bled the brakes, the fluid condition didn't really raise any alarms for me.
That being said, you're right, I should probably give her a good flush.
I did it once at about 100k.
She's about to click over 280k miles, so I suppose she's due...
Good place to start.

I've never had my abs activate on the streets so when I went out to the snow I made it activate to see how it would react and it bound up on me. Felt like the rear wheels were locked up and I was trying to drag the butt end around. Luckily it finally let up, had to just keep dragging and hitting the brakes and it let go. Didn't look into it any further since I never have any issues around home with it.

Mine has the front binding up. Normal operation, zero problems, brakes feel good.
But when it does bind.. wow...
Gonna do a flush in the very near future. Need to get this taken care of before we get snow/ice.
If a flush doen't fix it, I think I'm going to ditch the anti-lock.

Here's a link about disabling. I've thought about doing this too. Disable it when you want and then once you restart the truck it's back on.

Thanks for the link. That's something to thing about.
Probably easier than snatching the whole works.
