well, i finally got that tranny out last week and we took the rear housing off to see if we could find a cause of the lock up and bearing noise. we found that the rear bearing behind the fifth counter gear and let go and the outer housings of the bearing had been chewed up by the fifth counter gear and fifth gear. chipped up a couple of teeth and that was pretty much all the damage we could find.
so, it's at the tranny shop and i'll probably be able to pick it up tomorrow. he's gonna pull the front housing off and inspect the rest of the gearing and replace all the seals for me (i'd already bought the seal kit thinking i MIGHT be able to do something myself) and listen to the rest of the bearings.
all in all i think i'll come out ok. all the salvage tranny's in north alabama i could find were gonna cost me $650 and i'll get this one back for $600. and i wont have to roll the dice with a salvage. i've replaced the clutch pplate and tb and faced the flywheel, replaced the shifter seat and bushing. hopefully i'll get it back in tomorrow night and be screaming around in it saturday.

the tranny guy said he thinks the 5th gr and counter gear are backordered.
say's he usually gets parts in pretty quick, but he's been waiting for about a week.
does anyone know how to check the availability of parts that need to be ordered from toyota? i called the local dealer in huntsville, but the parts guy said he couldn't check. said he'd only know after he ordered them. kinda sounded like he didnt want to deal with me.
