Morphine

Oh gurus and members smarter than I (that means most everyone here), I want to adjust the idle on my 91 v6 3vze 4x4, as it seems to be idling extremely low and rough. I read up on the process and using the "Idle adjusting screw", however how much does one turn this screw? I turned mine 1/2 turn in each direction and it made no apparent change.

Should this screw be sensitive or am I overly cautious in my adjustments? Any help, advice, links, pictures, stories will be greatly appreciated.

While waiting or tomorrow I plan on testing the TPS, but until then...

You just aren't turning it enough. I made a couple turns to mine before I got it where I wanted it.

Get the vehicle nice and warm before you start adjusting the idle. Yes, it may take a couple turns. Just turn it 1/2 a turn or a full turn then rev the engine up and let it fall back down to the idle speed. Do this until you are satisfied.

Thanks for the input. I let the engine warm up before I tried testing it last time. however i didn't rev the engine and let it fall back down. The label in the engine compartment says the idle should be set to 850rpm's. This sounds low as my other yota's were set at 1050. Should I follow the factory label or go by my gut feeling in what sounds and performs best? Also what are the consequences of settingthe idle to high or leaving it to low?

I keep mine at around 800, my neighbors 3.0 is around that too.

Take the hose off that leads from your valve cover at the intake tube and spray a lot of throttle body cleaner in the hose while the engine is idling. The engine will pull the spray through the idle air bypass tube and you'll clean out the idle bypass. Then most likely, you'll notice your 4Runner idling faster than it should. Just adjust the idle screw and you're all set.

only problem I've heard of with doin that is that could mess up your TPS. as it's sensitive to tb cleaner if it were to get in it.

Which is why you use TB cleaner, not carb cleaner.
