3.slow alternator help!

Hi all. Just wanted to know if any one has done this mod:
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/100alt/index.html
I am running into problems and was hoping someone could help. I have a '94 4runner with the 3vze 3.0l motor and am trying to do this install. The problem that I am having is that the MR2 alternator hits the distributor and I do not have room to tension the belt. Another problem is that the plug on the back of my alternator does not match the MR2 alternator plug. It is oval and not round. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Are you sure you got the right alternator and made the bracket extension the right way?

I don't know of anyone who's done the mod, but I'm definitely interested to see how yours turns out.

I have the right alternator. I will have to recheck the length of the bracket. It was getting dark and I wanted to get everything back together for my trip to Offroad Expo. I'll have to try again when I get back home.

I believe "stretch768" did this mod before and then upgraded to something even bigger. I remember his MR2 Alt for sale (eons ago). You may want to PM him

You can also try this mod - STOCK ALTERNATOR UPGRADE - I'm thinking of doing it this winter. Naturally, I'll take pics and write up an article for YotaTech.

I wanted to do a cheap mod. I picked up the MR2 alternator for cheap and wanted to save money.

P.S.
BytheBay:
I sent you a email with my number. Did you get it?

I bought the MR2 alt upgrade "kit" from Chris Geiger, but haven't installed it yet. It's the modded bracket, MR2 plug for the alt, a '91 MR2 alt, and longer belt.

I'm waiting until I feel like doing the Taurus fan mod, and I'll install it then.

Let me know, and I may be able to take pictures, give measurements or something for you.

I had no idea Geiger sold such a kit. Mind if I ask how much?

I don't think he sells them as kits, I guess 105 Amps wasn't enough for him, so he went to something larger. I got everything for $75.

According to the write-up, I have the correct bracket length, but IMO, it's a little too long. 95_4X4runner, can you send me some picsof the bracket and the Plug? I think I will try to cut the bracket shorter, but I need to find the MR2 plug for the back. I may just crimp on some connectors and plug them into the back of the alternator, but I need to know where each of the three wires go.

It's too late tonight, but I'll take a picture of the bracket and plug for you, along with some measurements. He also included the plug, and simple wiring directions, I think the black and white wires are swapped, but I'll let you know tomorrow.

Also, to beef up the wiring for the extra current, I plan on adding another wire, instead of replacing it. At work, with our electronics, we often will use 10 ea of 22 gauge wires instead of 1 ea of 10 gauge wire to handle mega current, the smaller wires are easier to deal with, and end result is the same.

Here's a pic of the bracket (taken on my hood):

It's 10.5" overall length.

Here's a pic of the wiring diagram Chris gave me:

Also, he gave me the used belt, the part munber is 490K4.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info and help guys! I got it in today and it works perfectly. No more dimming of lights when I roll up the windows! It even looks stock. Toyota should have done this!

Cool

As always, not much of anything I say is applicable.

But in the transverse Toyota world (v6 Camry/ES/Windom) we swap the 130amp Highlander alt all the time. They fit on 2vz-fe, 3vz-fe, and 1mz-fe. Will they not fit on a 3vz-e?
