265/75r16 MT/R's are on my 2nd gen

As I mentioned in a couple of other posts I got MT/R's mounted yesterday. My dealer has to be the slowest in the world - 7 hrs for mounting/balancing 4 tires and an alignment.

I'm very happy with these tires. The ride so far is very soft even with 38 PSI front and 40 PSI rear which is what I used in my old AT's. I'm going to finish the current tank of fuel to see where my mileage is before I air them up more. If I can have similar mileage with the slightly taller tires and a softer ride I have the best of both worlds. Surprisingly they aren't as loud as I though they would be - I can't even hear them if the radio is on its lowest setting.

I took a couple of pics. Sorry they aren't action shots but I had a kid b-day party today and tonight I'm having dinner with a buddy who just had surgery. No time to play with them but I'll let you guys know what I think.

What do you guys think? 265/75r16 seems like a very good compromise for 2nd gens - doesn't affect the acceleration much.

Those wheels look really sharp. How noisy are the MTR's? I have BFG AT's now and want something more aggressive without going to a full mud tire. The MTR's are my top choice so far.

That size is really close to what mine came with stock. 31x10.5's vs 31.6x10.4. There should be zero impact on drivability. Did you have the factory 31's?

Yup had the factory 31's. I've noticed pickup on the highway seems a little sluggish - until I factor in the 2-3 MPH that the speedometer is off. I haven't had to downshift at highway speeds but I came close on a steep hill doing about 50. I was accelerating and then hit the hill so I had no momemtum to get me up to the 55 speed limit. I had that happen a couple of weeks ago on a similar hill with my 31's when they were too low on air so I'm going to add 5 PSI and see what that does.

As for noise they are a lot quieter than any mud tire I've ever heard of and quieter than some aggresive Firestone AT tires I had on my Nissan truck years ago. They do hum a little but the radio on its lowest setting drowns it out just fine. I'm happy as hell with them now I just want to find the right PSI to run them at. I want to put as much air in them without having the front steering floaty in cross winds and the back not bouncy.

Anyone else have an opinion? What tire pressure are you guys running on your MT/R's?

You have a 5 speed I see. Is you gearing 4.10 or 4.56. I've noticed less mileage change and such since I have 4.88's.

I have 4.56. I will add a few more PSI today and see what change that makes.

Have to go to the mother in law's today but guess what - there are some cool sand hills just down the street from her.

I checked my tire pressures and found the front was at 36 and rear at 37. My air compressor must really put out some hot air for them to cool that much! I went with 40 front and 42 rear this morning and wow what an improvement. The pickup is exactly as before.

Luckily there is a steep hill befor the mom-in-law's house that is right off the freeway offramp so I'll see how hills hurt my performance with the taller tire. BTW - even with all this air in the tires they ride way softer than my old Bridgestone AT's did.

The wheels and tires look great on your truck, Vic.

When you calculate the new gas mileage, make sure that you account for the fact that the tires are a little taller. If you don't, you will get a false mileage reading. It will appear that mileage increased because your speedometer is clocking slower than normal.

Actually I need to add 3% to compensate for my speedometer reading slow. So actually I will travel more miles then my odometer is displaying. I figured that at 28 MPH I need to add 1 MPH, at 55 I need to add 2 MPH, and at 83 I need to add 3 MPH to account for the slow reading speedometer.

Victor,

I'm most impressed. I take it there wasn't any problems with delivery. I hope not. They look great, and I love the wheels. I think I might keep my eyes opened for a set. Especially if I can get them cheap. I'm glad things went well.

hey victor, very nice looking tires.... if you've had a chance to spend some time on them, can you comment on:

1) performance in rain
2) change in performance of the 4Runner (acceleration/power/comfort/etc) overall

?

I think these tires are great, just wondering what changes will take place when replacing an AT tire....

1. We don't get much rain at all here (6" a year) so it may be a while.

2. Once I raised my tire pressures from my old ones acceleration seems the same. I have to be concious that my speedometer is off a couple of miles per hour. The ride is much more comfortable than with my old set of tires - go figure. Power on the highway may be down a little but today it was 90 degrees so I had the A/C on - power seems a little lower than before with the A/C on. With the A/C off I don't notice a difference.

I did the 2nd gen airbox mod today that UKMyers posted and it does indeed help with mid-RPM power.
