22re starting problems

Does anyone have problems with thier starter? I just replaced mine a year ago and I have these symptoms.

1. My starter will turn, but the engine doesn't crank. If I push the clutch in and roll the truck back, then pop the clutch...I can usually start it. i think it moves the flywheel to a new spot.

2. Sometimes nothing happens, no cranking at all.

Are my teeth on my flywheel worn or is my starter just toasted???

My buddy says this is a typical problem of toyotas...is it true??

When you say your starter will turn does it click or just sound normal? I am leaning towards rebuilding your contacts at this point.

Typical problem? My experience says no. I've replaced the starter once at 160k (228k now). Otherwise, no starter problems. Been through plenty of those expensive alternators though.

Do you think that the throw out gear is not engaging?...I have seen it where they were stuck and would not pop out and engage the flywheel. Had to remove it and lubricate it.

It sounds like that throw out gear maybe. Is that hard to lubrictae?

Like I said when it sounds I can hear the starter spinning but no flywheel/motor action.

Then the other scenario is that no cranking of anything happens. not even a click. Maybe I have two seperate problems. DavidA's solution sound like a good possibility.

What he said. Pull it...it could also be that it is not getting enough voltage to engage...check your cables to it to see if they are worn or if there is corrosion on the battery post connection and/or connection on the starter.

I'd didn't even think of voltage. Good ideas. I'll try all of these. So is there something that actually retracts to turn my flywheel? Sounds like it should be an easy fix. Everyone keeps telling me that yotas always have starter problems. It's been cool up until now. I'll get under it soon. Thanks -Seth

Check the starter contacts (after you check batt. connections) there are copper contacts inside the starter that wear out easy fix about an $8 part. Look up 4crawler.com good info there.
