1st mod ever!

Just did my first mod ever in my life, a friend an I did the deckplate mod to my 96 runner. I don't feel any difference or hear anything different like some ppl have said, maybe it's the mesh I'm using as a grill, I'm thinking it's too thick.

I went to home depot and bought some of that meshy stuff you put under plants, only because that's the only thing I could buy in small pieces. It's kinda thick, and restricts airflow, but it'll do for now I guess. But it looks pretty tight.

Except one problem, my check engine light comes on now. I was sure to use sensor-safe silicon, so I do'nt know what could be the problem. I re-plugged the efi fuse. Any suggestions? Thanks.

hm, i can't think of anything specific, but you might want to just go back and make sure all the connections are there and tight. it sounds like you did everything right, but you never know. the efi fuse is back, so it shoulndn't be that. you cleaned out the airbox after you cut the hole right? i'm not sure, but i guess if you don't, those plastic shavings could cause the check engine light to come on. and you can check what exact "check engine" code you're getting by going to auto zone or something and having them run it.

i did the deckplate mod, but fortunately had no problems. maybe someone here will know better.

When I did mine the light came on and it scared the @%#$ out of me. I had to dis-connect the - battery terminal a few times and then the ecu finally learned that I did something that was going to be OK.

The same thing happened when I did the ISR mod.

If you want a sound difference do the ISR mod, you will hear it.

Check your vacuum hoses. Specifically the one coming off of the air box. Mine came on several months back and I went by the dealer to have them check it out. My dealer here in B'ham is awesome and he hooked it up to the computer to check the code for me for free. Turns out one of the vacuum hoses was a little loose. Tightened it up and the code cleared. This may be case if you pulled out the airbox to do the deckplate mod. Hope this helps. Later.

I had the same reaction as Jim. That was my first mod and when the light came on, I was convinced never to mess with a perfectly running vehicle again. Dread

Anyway, my ecu adjusted after a few days and gave me the mental green light to mod away!!

Well I checked all the hoses and everything seems tight, so don't really know what's goin on. Prolly take it over to 96 Runner and have him check it out

Another thing, is it just me or does anybody else notice their rigs using more gas? probably just me.

96 Runner will hook you up I'm sure. I too freaked out when my CE light came on right away, pulling the fuse took care of it. This is a pic from jacksonpt's write-up, just to make sure you pulled the correct fuse:

No worries. Give me a call. Hey, while we're at it, I have something else we can install on your 4Runner.

Ahh, that's good!

I'm not sure exactly if the big black one is a relay or what; I never pulled that one. Maybe someone else will know what that one does?

My mesh that I used to keep rocks and/or leaves and stuff out is pretty thick and I think is restricting airflow. Do a lot of you guys use mesh or is it just a open hole to the filter? Cuz if it is then I'm just gonna cuz away the mesh.

i use a screen. it's this thin metal screen i had lying around, but you can use the screen like the type used in windows. i'd use a screen, it offers some protection and peace of mind

I use screen material too. You can pick up a whole role of the stuff from Home Depot for under $10, but you really only need a 5" sq. piece.

You can learn to diagnose the obd codes yourself, follow these two links for more information:

http://www.mad-mechanic.com/toyota/toyotaobd.shtml

http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/codes/

I recently had a problem with the check engine light on my Toyota Tercel and after a lot of headache and troubleshooting I eventually found the plug to a sensor had come unplugged! It required some electrical tape to hold it together, then no more check engine light, thank God!
