I've been wanting to do something... but just haven't done it yet. Be curious to see if anyone has done such a mod.

I used to run one in my '85, small adjustable cup holder screwed to the back of shifter console. It worked OK, but I had to get rid of it when I had dual cases installed.

Someday, I'll finally have a real pair of cup holders to replace that one. I have a Tuffy console installed now in place of the stock rear heater/console. It comes with a pair of nice holders and once I get the console moved forward about 6" more, I'll have room to screw the cup holders in place on the back of the console. They are made of formed sheet metal with neoprene inserts that hold cups and bottles very snug.

If you have bucket seats and remove the center consoll you can put in a after market Jeep center consol. I had that worthless consol that was missing the lid to the tray. I now have 2 cup holders and a locking box. I think its made by Bestop. Cost $50-$60

I would suspect you had to get rid of the rear heater in doing this... Correct?
I was hoping to keep the heater since I do have passengers quite a bit.

Cool

My truck has the built-in holders above the heater controls, but when I use them, the heater controls are a little hard to see or get at. So, here's what I use:

I mounted it right below the vent window on the door panel (2 screws). They fold closed and hold up to a one liter soda bottle. They are commonly found at rv and marine stores. Pretty inexpensive too!

Unfortunately half doors are not an option for me.. This is my daily driver and seems a bit extreme to build some half doors just so I have a place to put my drink But if I was in the market for half doors that would be ideal.

Where I live the heater does come in handy for the long winters... I guess the search for a solution continues...

I will have to see if I can find something similar to the Mugger that Jovis posted... Although I would prefer something in the centre console.

I installed a center console from a 2000 Xterra, I now have decent storage space and two cup holders up front and two in the rear of the console.

Do any of you have pics of the custom installed center console?

The Wedgie is perfect for SR5's with the door pocket.

Go to wal-mart or target and get "the wedgie" 2 cup holders and a square between them. Fits great. Holds a pop can in front or back and a nice insulated travel mug in the front. (handle goes into the square part.) I haven't dumped anything yet. Yeah, it is close to your left leg, but my leg only hits it when pulling g's on right handers.
Shoot, get two! One for the passenger as well.

Whey may a 6.75" wide one that is supposed to fit fairly well. I guess I mis-ordered mine and ended up with an 8" wide console and it took some work to make it fit, but it is nice:

Its just there temporarily until I get rid of the rear t-case shifter and move the console forward about 6" inches. That should put the rear flush with the back of the seats and then the cup holder goes right behind the cushion.
