1996 4Runner - Is this a Good Value?

Greetings to everyone, I'm a long time reader/admirer (I have a lot of friends who are Toyota owners), but I decided to finally make a first post seeing as how I'm finally close to purchasing a 4Runner of my own.

The thing is I am not sure what would be considered a fair price for the particular model I'm looking at, and hence why I'm here looking for help.

The 4Runner in question is a 1996, 3rd Gen model, 2.7L, 5-speed, 4WD, ~150,000 miles. It's a nice basic model with non-power locks and windows, just the way I like, and of course the standard tranny, which is a must. It's pretty much stock, except for some new plugs/wires and tires replaced about 14 months ago. The engine is in good shape, runs well, as does the transmission, but the body has some light rust, but really only on the chrome rear bumper (frame looks good).

The guy is asking $3500 [CAD], but is willing to go to $3k. Is this a fair price for the mileage and condition? I see a lot of 3rd Gens going for a lot more, but they are usually in mint condition, while this one has been used every day as a commuter (though obviously never abused). Also, are there any particular quirks of the 96 or the 4-cyl I should be looking at?

Anyway, as input would be appreciated, as I'd love to join the Yota flock, and have been searching for a 4-cyl, 5-speed 4Runner for a long time so when this one came up, I became very interested.

Thanks in advance, and happy trails!

I agree, sounds fair but also sounds slow.
If it's what you want then take it and run.

Price is fair, but as others have said with the 2.7 and the weight of the truck it wont be winning any races anytime soon.

I know it isn't the fastest truck on the road, but I'm very partial to 4-cylinder engines, and have always enjoyed working on them and driving them. I test drove it the other day and it seemed just fine (speed wise) for my needs, so I'm not too worried about it.

I'm not an extreme rock-hopper, as I do the majority of my off-roading on logging roads and poorly graded dirt, so the lack of torque again isn't the biggest problem for me.

Glad to hear the price seems fair, thanks a lot!

It wont be that bad. Sounds like a good deal too. Even better if maintenance has been done.

I'm sure you'll love the truck. Having a 4-banger is a PLUS nowadays...
