Quicksilver74's build thread

gonna start tearing into the truck tomorrow. i got it home today and i can move it around the yard a little but cylinders 3 and 4 seem like they are completely gone with 4 being the worst of the two.

i am going to be doing a full rebuild of the engine with an ENGNBLDR (sp?) kit. gonna use the 261 (i think thats right) cam and a cheapo pace setter header. i know this is no race car and i am more focused on getting my Kenne Bell 2.8 on my 2011 GT, so i dont think i will throw a lot of money on parts that arent giving me a large gain. the only reason i am replacing the manifold is that it is cracked.

the trans will be coming out as well for issues with popping out of 3rd and a hard time going into 1st. just a stock rebuild on that with a new clutch and slave cylinder.

now onto the rims and tires....... i work for a tire shop so i get a good deal on some nice tires. the truck has new 31" street tires on black painted aftermarket steel wheels. these will be removed in favor of a new set of Mickey Thompson classic 2 wheels and some new GoodYear Duratrac tires. i got the rims for $400 and the tires for $330.

the truck has a $200 Maaco paint job that doesnt look too bad. the bumpers will be swapped out for chrome sometime soon and i would like to sawp the grill for a 95 style chrome grill.

quick cell phone pic of the $900 truck

now a couple of questions,

1: can i pull the engine and trans together if i remove the transfer case? looking of rthe easiest route due to working at home on the ground.

2: can i swap a 95 grill and headlight buckets directly into this truck? will the newer chrome bumpers bolt up the same?

i am in no way new to working on cars, i have been doing this for the past 13 years. i am new to toyotas but not cars in general

What year is that? It think that generation from 89 or 90 to 95 were all pretty much the same for the bumper and grill.
Ive never even thought about pulling the trans and the motor at the same time. I dont think it can be done because with a cherry picker your'e going to be lifting the motor up and out as soon as the oil pan is higher than the front clip. Maybe if the front clip is easily removeable?

youre going to have to take off both drivelines and the cross member either way. I think the bell housing is only like 3 or 4 big bolts, then a couple smaller ones with brackets to the oil pan and exaust if i remember correctly. and might as well just seperate them once to inspect the clutch, rear main and trans input seal IMO. When I rebuilt my motor, i didn't do a new clutch and was pissed at myself when the clutch went out a couple months later.

it is an 89 with around 144K on it. i am only the 3rd owner of the truck!!

i am use to working on mustangs where you can drop the engine and trans in under an hour by lifting the body off the K member. i hate working on the ground so i was hoping for an easy way out.

Yea the 22re's pretty easy to disconnect from the tranny and pull out

I did it when I was fifteen w/o any problems except for stupid mistakes that were my fault

that does look like a sweet score for 900 bucks!

There could have been some changes between 89 and 95 even though they are the same generation
