Honda crv looses power when warm but no check engine light
Hi, I have a 1997 honda crv which I got to use as an extra vehicle after our very well loved 1998 isuzu rodeo developed a crack in the head.
I need to selll the crv now. I just pickuped up a 1997 4runner limited yesterday.
The crv looses power once it is warmed up. You will be driving at a steady speed and then it will just bog. If you floor it, the transmission will down shift and the engine pulls hard and seems to have full power. No check engine light and my code scanner with not even plug into this vehicle. It is like the pins in my connector are to big.
I thought the cat was clogged so I drilled two small holes in the exhaust before the cat and nothing. I am going to weld them closed today.
I checked the throttle position sensor and the voltage seems smooth.
I need to fix this thing right away so I can sell it to find the 4runner and fix it up. Any advice would be great.

Could be any # of things really... but if its only when warm, I would suspect it may have air in the cooling system somewhere, or a coolant temp sensor may not b reading correctly.. In both cases, there would be no c.e.l. Other than that... all I can say is maybe plug wires, or a coil... those tend to act up when warm.

Yea I had it doing a weird missfire after it lost power but they it stopped. I would think that the check engine light would go on for that.
I changed the spark plugs and wires when I got it.

Check automatic trans fluid level?
Throttle postion does play a huge roll in transmission operation and on these CRV's i've seen come into the shop alot have this exact problem intermidately with their CRV's and the 3 that i've worked on have been a faulty TPS which required replacement of the entire throttle body.... local parts houses would not sell the TPS seperate... it was Throttle body or nothing...
There is a resitance test you can do to the TPS... we have the test peramiters at work.... maybe someone here has the FSM on it... or try a hanes manual...?

I changed the tps and nothing. Checked the map. Starts at 2.9 volts and drops .5v for every 5in/lbs vacuum. Still stumped. Anymore suggestions would be great.

I agree about the obd2 port. I will try a different scanner because there is no way that mine will work on this truck.
How do I check the fuel presure. I do not see a port on the fuel rail. I have a pressure gauge for gm vehicles. I put it in between the fuel line and filter. I will see if that will work on this but not sure.
Fuel pressure would make sense but when it dies out you can floor it and it has power. I would think if it was low on pressure it would dies it you gas it. I had that happen with my chevy caprice years ago.
Is there something that could make the ignition itermitently cut out.
It is so hard to say if it is air fuel or spark because it usually does not happen for long. It just bogs like you turned on and engine brake. It falls flat on its face. I held the throttle steady when it did it once today and it surged allittle. It was bogging and then it took off without moving the throttle and then back to bogging. It does not always do this though. Very confusing. Anybody want to buy a honda.

The only reason that I do not think it is the fuel pump is because when you put the pedal to the floor when it is loosing power it goes. If it was low on pressure then the more you accelerate the worse it should get.

Well I sold it as is for $3950. The guy had another 1998 and in the same color and loved this one. I told him what was wrong with it and he said he would fix it. Now I have money for the 4runner. I just realized that no one at my house has an american car anymore. We always had chevy. Now 2009 honda crv 1999 nissan maxima 1997 4runner 1995 22re pickup 2002 camry 4cylinder le

Honda CRV loses power
Anyone ever finally fixed the issue of the Honda crv losing power but when you accelerate shifts transmission and picks up speed. It does it after a while and not all the time.
