Top shift or forward shift with automatic?

May have just messed up and bought a forward shift transfer case attached to 5 speed for my auto 3.4 swap. Can I use the forward shift? Or should I take it back. I don't want to buy a top shift conversion. Fast help would be appreciated.

3.4 swap with doner 340f auto. I just bought a gear driven transfer case (still attached to 5 speed) to put on the auto with the inchworm adapter. It's a forward shift instead of top shift. Will it work?

It depends on which fwd shift t-case you have, I have been told there are two different fwd shift rod lengths. I have spoke with someone who did the fwd shift swap you are speaking of. Get out the tape and measure everything up. A 3.4 with an auto will be a great setup for wheelin' IMHO anyway, but some say I'm biased.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious. With the forward shift, the xfer case lever is physically on the 5speed (which I am not using) rather than the transfer case itself. So when I chuck the 5speed, out goes my lever too. Somebody talk some sense into me.

1995 4runner recipient, 1998 4runner doner. I'm using 3.4 and doner's automatic trans. I just bought a gear driven case (still attached to 5speed trans, which I am NOT using) from an 83 Toyota truck. It appears that this gear driven case is a forward shifting unit. Will it work with the doner automatic and an inchworm adapter? I don't know how to explain it any better.

OK, just checked out the pics in your build. Should have looked before or maybe having them posted here would help? I don't think it will be a direct bolt up with a fwd shift case. Looks like you need to do some mocking up of parts.

Des, I just found you on pirate- nice build! I guess the auto swaps are not common at all. I can't find any mention of needing a top shift case only for an auto swap any where on the interwebs. Sitting them side by side helped me realize it's not gonna happen unless I get a top shift converting kit, which costs almost as much as I paid for the 5speed and xfer case.

Can anyone confirm that this won't work with certainty.
