So coming home from work this morning my 3.4 died on the interstate going 70. Electric all stayed on, but engine completely cut out. I get to the side of the road and it will not restart. It cranks but does not even sputter. This is an 87 runner that has an engine from a 99 runner, the ecu is from a 99 I believe. It currently still has the 340h tranny. The MAF was cleaned wit throttle body cleaner by PO but that does not explain instant death. The ECU harness is also a possible culprit. It is ugly, and I think vibration may have killed it. What are some thoughts on the gremlin and how I can take care of it?

I did not have a chance to diagnose most of the basics, but I am wondering if there are any ideas that may be common from a not so clean swap.

Could be your Fuel Pump just up and died...start with the basics, don't go down the hard road if the fix is on the easy road...

If its been running fine for quite awhile its probably something quite basic...

one thing I did recently was to mount the new ecu harnesses facing up in which i had to somewhat force the ecu into the position I hard mounted it to the chassis and i have some vibrations so that is why my thoughts are going to wires grounding out or the harness coming loose.

was there alot of tension on the ecu plugs...possible they could have just popped out of socket and need to be re-seated...check that since its easy to get to and then go down basic road

well pull the kick panel and look for anything thats obvious. Then check the basics, its its fuel, then check the mass air flow sensor. a basic test will let you know where to go. No compression check the timing belt.. get what i'm saying?

So pulled out the mess of wires and found one that somewhat worries me. I am pretty sure that the pump is not getting power. Hopefully I can trace the line and fix the ground, unless it is an issue at the ecu. One way or the other when turning key to the start position the pump was not engaging. Pulled the pump and it is working fine.

Check the +B wire.(that is how it is on the EWD) Mine was W-R, when that wire was not hooked up it would turn over but not start and with your wiring being moved around it could have came undone or something. Good luck.

With further diagnosis, found that the pump was good and not getting power. We also found that the fuse was blown going to it, but though that was from trying to test the pump. It was not the case. A simple fuse was the issue, but I think that it may be more apparent from there being a short in the line. I will trace the line when I get more time. I know the harness will be an issue in the future, so that clean up will ensue this spring.
