might be venturing into a 3.4 swap

Hey guys I have a 94 4runner with a auto.. I blew the engine a few weeks ago and I have some options on what I am going to do First off there is a local here that have a brandnew rebuilt 3.slow for1300 ok that is the easy choice..Or I am wanting to go all out and do a 3.4 swap.. But I have a few questions. first of all what would be the way to do it. Keep the auto transmission setup or go for a full auto manual swap along with the 3.4 swap. That seems to be the best route to take but I would not only have to hunt down a donor 3.4 but also a donor 4runner for the manual swap. I have read the articles on ors and what not and going 5 spd seems the route to take ..
but what do you guys think

If you are willing to do a whole engine and tranny why not get them bolted together from the donor vehicle? The R150 behind the 3.4 is the same. You do need to change to a passenger drop transfer case like you have now. The reason I mention that is that the wiring is a lot easier if the donor wiring harness came from an engine that is the same as the swap vehicle. i.e. if you have an auto tranny and want to keep it get a 3.4 from an auto truck. If you have a 5 speed (or want to swap to one) get the 3.4 from a 5 speed truck.

There are ways of putting in the 3.4 and keeping your tranny if you want to go that route. If you can afford it get the 3.4 and tranny from the donor vehicle if possible and then solve the transfer case issue - which is just finding an R150 chain transfer which go cheap on eBay and here.

ok so the best rounte is (i plan on getting an entire donor vehicle) is if im getting a 5spd is just to find a R150 transfer case from a 2gen 5spd right? Also I was under the impression is I could not use my 2gen A340 transmisson as it would not work with the 3.4 ecu.

Also will I have to worry about the ADD system or is that a completly diffrent subject all together

I did a 3.4, 5spd swap into my 94 4runner. The motor I bought was from an auto 3.4 but it accepted a pilot beaing so I was able to swap in a 5spd. I also bought a new wiring harness for a 96 t100 and ecu to match(after reasearch off some sensors I found that the previous owner of the motor was an idiot telling me it was from a 98 because of sensor codes it had to be either a 96 or 97) Its alot of work to do the 5spd swapo but its easy if you have time. youll have to get a clutch pedal assembly and all that stuff. The wiring is easy for the manual but also for the auto really. get a donor if you can and get the wiring diagrams for that specific motor. get them from toyota if they will give them to you or go to techinfo.toyota.com and get the subcription and download them. I did my own conversion harness saving me$900 plus. it was fun and a great learning experience. by the way the add is for your front diff. youll want that stuff if you keep your IFS. I put a Solid axle under the front which made it easier since its my straight rock crawler and I didnt need alot of sensors to make it run just neccesities. I hope this helps some and if you have more questions about this swap let me know

ok most likley I will be getting a 96 crashed toco with a 5spd ..I know I will need to get a Tcase other than that what excally will I need to get for the trans swap part of the project (3.4 part is pretty much covered by ors) What will I need to go out and find parts wise I know I will need a pedal assembly and a 5sd driveshaft from another 4runner (if I rember right the auto and 5spd drive shaft are diffrent lengths right?) also will I be able to use any of the misc parts like the Master cluch from the toco and what not? Or will I need to go to a junk yard and get all 2gen parts for the cluch assembly

you'll need the pedal assembly from a 2nd gen 4runner or pickup. get a new clutch master and slave cylinder from marlin crawler. you'll need to make you own lines for plumbing the clutch but its easy. as for drive shafts get the motor in then worry about them you'll need custome length most likely. measure from middle of tcase flange to pinion flange. with a older motor like a 96 you could easily use you existing charcoal canister. you can save tons on parts if you do your own work. ors is expensivve but nice. oh ya exhaust that's another thing you'll need to look at. I'm using downey headers and I built my own crossover. it can aslo be expensive. you'll need a custom crossover cause the stock one from the 3.4 won't work

Though I cannot comment on the 3.4 auto to manual part of your conversion question, I can unequivocally state that the 3.4 is a whole helluva lot more fun to drive than the 3.0.

I did my swap back in August (97 Taco 5-speed into my 91 4Runner 5-speed) and have been enjoying it ever since.

Take your time and good luck.

yep just lookin for a donor now. The funny thing is Im not worried or have any conserns at all when it comes to the 3.4 swap. Ive done engine swaps before (on my 3 celica's) but the only part I think I am gonna have problems with is the auto to manual swap..never done one of them before lol
