Red face AC Hack Job Rant !!

After reading the sticky thread on 3.4 AC .

I think my only real option here is to remove it all and start over.

Looks to be 3 or more different Years of parts plus what is still left from the original vehicle.

Because at this point the only way to get the Manifold gauges on is to remove the power steering pump. While not that hard it is a pain.

It was working and upon looking to put on the gauges is when all this came to light.

Just goes to show some times you put your trust in the wrong people.

I feel your frustrations on hack jobs. So they hack 3.4 things as well?? Just kidding, Always surprises me at the hack jobs I see that would cost about as much to do it right in the first place. Even on the newer trucks they hack things, grrrr... I do agree with you that sometimes you are best to remove it all and install it to the way the factory had it and do it the right way.

My swap is a mix of original parts and parts from the donor vehicle connected by custom hoses and it is a clean and functioning system.

I don't know a way around a mix of parts. I cant put a 99 4Runner (my donor) evap and blower assembly in my 88 dash. My stock condenser works fine so why adapt a 99?

My 88 compressor isn't going to easily fit on a 3.4 so I just used the 3.4 compressor that came on the 99 donor.

The 3.4 uses the ECM to control the idle up where as the 88 had the VSV and other parts. I had to use the 99 A/C amplifier to have the idle up work.

My 88 also originally had R-12 so I just converted to R134A. I had to have two hoses made using the ends off two of the original 88 hoses and two of the 99 hoses with charge ports added since the 3.4 compressor didn't have any.

Yeah, you're right it is a mix of parts but necessarily so. Mine isn't a hack job though. At least in my eyes. It came out clean, looks factory and works great.

A 3.4 swap is an "adaptation". A mix of parts is necessary. A hack job is doing it poorly.

Red face

Yes indeed I under stand the mixing and matching .

But to have to unbolt the power steering pump and pull it aside to get manifold gauges on seems to me not the correct way to go about it.

Then that was not only poor work.

I need to get a new liquid line and have yet to see them except from Toyota which is no big deal .

I just figured to pick a year and get new lines with the ports on the lines new compressor put on a new dryer and be done.
