Mobil vs. Amsoil

I went to AutoZone with my Dad today cause he needs some oil for his Chevy. I was curious to see if they had any Amsoil products...ZERO. I was very disappointed.

Do you think it would be worth me spending the extra time and money in either finding Amsoil here locally (very doubtful) or odering online and paying shipping. Or do you think it would be OK to just go with some high quality Mobil 1 Synth.?

If you think Mobil 1 is the way to go, what do you all recommend as far as 5W vs. 10W? Also, around here the temps don't get very low, every now and then a negative number will come about but what do you think I should use. 30 or 40? I haven't looked in the manual but I figured I might as well "Ask The Experts"

What do you all think?

I have searched and searched and have found test results and stuff but that crap doesn mean ANYTHING to me. I just want a straight up answer.

Another question is, do you think its worth me tracking down an Amsoil Oil Filter or just use the Toyota filter? If it will seriously make my truck last longer I will order an Amsoil one.

Please help me here, I'm confused.

Thx.

Fink

I am switching over to synthetics in all my vehicles. Right now I am running www.royalpurple.com in my Explorer. I am happy with it, and bought it at a local NAPA. I have seen Amsoil at GI Joes if you have those stores. I have also seen Redline products at a local auto shop called B&B Auto.

I don't think there is probably any big difference between the super-premium synthetics (Royal Purple, Amsoil, and Redline) so if you can find any of them you are probably doing fine. Do search here for "Mobil 1" and you will find a lot of info. If I recall, mnost people who have used it liked it in the beginning, but some manufacturing or formulation changes have caused it to break down more easily in lore recent years...I am just recalling this from memory though.

www.royalpurple.com
www.amsoil.com
http://www.redlineoil.com/whyredline.htm

Check the "dealers" areas of any of these sites to see if there is one near you.

The only place I've found Amsoil around here was at Off-Road Warehouse. I went ahead and bought it from the online store. If you're looking at spending less than $100 get the supplies from a dealer (Bob_98SR5 is a good guy). If you're planning on spending more than $100 per year than you should probably buy the preferred customer thingy.

I couldn't really tell you about Amsoil vs. Mobil 1. All I know is that people use Mobil 1 and don't seem to have any problems with it

As far as oil filters are concerned. I asked that question a little while ago and the general opinion seemed to be that factory filters work just as fine as Amsoil filters.

I think Mobil 1 is the way to go and I'll go ahead and get a factory oil filter too.

Thanks for the info guys, it will probably within the next few weeks that I get it done. I looked at the filter and it seems like a pain in the so I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about that.

Thx. again for the info,

Fink

I've tried Mobile-1 for a full "cycle" of oil...and I'd say the Amsoil just makes the engine run smoother (ran it before, and after the Mobile-1).

I don't know facts, just what I've perceived.

The latest Mobil 1 formulation, the SuperSyn variety is excellent. Probably on par with the Amsoil and the Mobil is available at WalMart in 5 quart jugs for under $19.

Depending on how often you want to change it, I doubt you'll much better off spending a lot more money on Redline or RP...

What if you just mixed one quart or so of each of the best oils together?

No sense in tainting good Amsoil.

isn't the high mileage one just a blend?

if mine didn't want to leak from the valve covers and I drove it a lot more, I'd probably use the truck and suv 5w40 mobil 1...
