Half moon grommets? 22re

I need to adjust the valves on my '86 22re. Ihave the valve cover gasket. Do I need to replace the half moon shaped grommets between the valve cover and the head? The valve cover gasket does leak and it looks like it is leaking in front, among other places. Thanks in advance. Jacque

It's a good idea to replace both the crescent grommets and valve cover gasket at the same time.
When I adjusted my valves, I bought the complete gasket and grommet set from AutoZone for less than $12. The funny thing is, the valve cover gasket alone was more than the kit.

The kit comes with valve cover gasket, semi-circular grommets, and valve cover grommets.

I created a write-up on my website detailing valve adjustments on my '83 22R:

Hope that helps!

You didn't get new ones with the valve cover gasket? I always have. Unless you bought at the dealer, every valve cover kit I've seen comes with them.

Dave no I did'nt. It only came with the valve cover gasket and the 4 grommets for the valve cover bolts. It is a fel-pro gasket set. Maybe it should have the crescent shaped grommets?

Every Fel-Pro gasket kit I've used always came w/ the half moon things. I also use a small amount of gasket sealant on 'em to prevent leaks.

A little research at Fel-Pro's website came up with the following:

VS50358R - Valve cover set including cylinder head endplugs and grommets

VS26081R - Valve cover set w/o cylinder head endplugs and grommets

The fact that your set came with the grommets but without the endplugs is puzzling.

After reading Alan's post I took the gasket set back to Autozone and sure enough the set was supposed to have come with end caps . They swapped out the kit no questions asked. thanks for the heads up. Jacque.

Lot of good in that. Glad it all worked out in the end.
