Being on the mechanical side of both, the FJ is much easier to do basic maintenance on (the Xterra will cut the out of you doing an oil change). I used to work at a Toyota dealership before I joined the Army, but we were right next to a Nissan dealership we owned, so they'd push work to us if they were too busy with their 4 bay shop vs. our 16 bay shop. I've driven and worked on both quite a bit and would get a FJ long before I signed any paperwork on an Xterra. Not to mention, we never did any kind of repairing damage on FJ's, just routine maintenance. We had one guy who was a pretty loyal customer with a lifted, locked and rhyno lined FJ and he beat the crap out of it and it never let him down.

fj's are awesome, just hate that tiny back door though; I know cant blame the
aesthetics. And also port a potty blue, who do you suppose got fired, thinking up that color, or which dealership do they sweep floors for, and are
at now?

I am an avid Toyota fan, gotten most of my family in Toyotas. However, I now own an Xterra. I think I can give a pretty unbiased opinon.
The FJ is reliable. Buddy has one 2 years old, 120K and drives the crap out of it. Never had a problem. The FJ does have a lot of issues to me espcially after coming from a 4Runner. The FJ is pretty bare bones or it is an option and it ain't cheap. No sunroof, no lighted ignition, no map lights, no rear speakers, 2nd set of doors swing out and down so you have to pull them up and closed. A bit hard to do. Horrible blind spots. Back seat is like sitting in a tunnel. If you out anyone in the backseat you have to move the front seats fowards. Do nothing lights on the mirrors
Xterra
Bit too much plastic
no sunroof option also
back window doesn't open
I feel like Toyota designed the Fj for youthful outdoor enthusiasts but priced them for older dual income families.

from my personal experience, my mom recently got an 06 xterra and i dont like it. its small not too powerfull and a little to suburban, or passenger vehicle-ish (with a small backseat). on the other hand my girlfriends, gay boyfriend, recently let me drive his 08 fj for a 200+ mile trip other than having 35's on it, it was stock. all i can say is it was awesome. tons of power,
Toyota 4.0 236HP 266 lb.ft torque
Nissan 4.0 265HP 284 lb.ft torque
They have identical 0-60 and 1/4 mile times when stock.

I've never understood why the feel doesn't match the numbers. I still haven't found a single extera that will beat me off the line in my stock FJ...

I haven't found a single 4th gen or an FJ that beat my 3rd gen off the line but they will kill me after an eighth mile.

Wheeler on a very tight budget.
If money is not a problem the FJ is obviously the best buy. This is coming from a 1st gen supercharged V6 5 spd. Owner. And I've driven a '12 xterra and '13 FJ. Love my xterra but if I had a choice of good used vehicles I'd go with a yota. Problem is you guys never want to sell them! I do call my xterra a poor runner. Happy trails to all!
