Potential Purchase: Is it worth it? '84 xtra cab
My fellow YT'ers I'm looking for your guidance here. I have a chance to pick up the following truck but I'm not sure if it's worth it. What do you all think? This would be a "project" truck for sure. I would use it to enhance my skills mechanically and hopefully teach myself to fab and weld on it, thus not effecting my DD. So here are the specs as described in the description:
1984 extra cab sr5,22re,5spd 2wd(maybe 85 he posted it twice once for each description).
PS, Sunroof, electric windows, all glass in the vehicle.
Fiberglass front fenders.
Custom front prerunner style bumper.
fuel injected.
starts and runs, but runs "rough". He has no worries that I could drive it home 15 to 20 miles.
Frame is free of rust.
Body appears yo be in decent shape, nothing that screams "accident" but it is over 20 years old.
--==PICS==--
Here are the pics the owner had posted. Not the best but it gives you an idea. Also he said that "the door panels are back on, don't wory about the pic".
The owner is very flexible on the price and is asking for $800. Now I know that he has had it for sale for a while and used to be asking more. When I spoke to him he seems real eager and said "cash talks". If I could get this for $500 or $600 hundred would it be a "good" deal? Possibly a project early model prerunner? Any advice? opinions?
I say for $500 I cant go wrong if it starts and drives on it's own power. My fiancee doesn't see that. So what would you do?

if I had 500$ cash to spend I would tell you not to buy it and tell me where the truck is located if I lived in Cali.
but I don't have 500$ to spend on a truck nor do I live in Cali so I would say it could be a good deal I would check and see how much it costs to rebuild the front axle and find out what all has been replaced recently.

id buy that for $800, and its an 85 not an 84 because it is fuel injection which is better than carb. it looks pretty good to me. you cant realy go wrong at that price, its in cali so no rust.

Yeah it is 2wd so I thought it might become a pre runner. I think that for the asking price if I can get her home on her own power then it's worth it. I just need to check the frame and engine first. Otherwise most everything else will be replaced or repaired eventually.

Thanks everyone for the input. I contacted the owner tonight to make arrangements for tomorrow but he informed me that someone called with cash in hand. He showed up 30 minutes later and the truck was gone for asking price. Oh well, time to build a bigger budget and keep looking for a new project. Thanks again everyone!

The engine alone was worth 500, then you have axle, tranny, dash, seats, bed, hood, put em all together to make a running toyota. It was easily worth the price he was asking, thats why it got swooped up so quick.
