tps position affect idle at 2k rpm?
So I've been struggling with my 4runner's idle lately, it was idling at 1500 rpms and after much deliberation as to whether or not the tps was bad, I decided to pull of the throttle body, check the tps and give the tb a good cleaning. The tps ended up being ok and the tb was pretty dirty, but nothing to bad. I re-assembled everything and the idle was still around 1500 rpms. I tilted the tps upward a tad, and the idle dropped to 1000 rpms, but when a would press the gas, at 2k rpms, the truck would jump between 2k and 1500rpms. So that was a long way of asking if tilting the tps could cause that affect? I intend on returning the tps to the original location, but I need more ideas as what to do to correct my high idle. Thanks

How are you setting the TPS idle position?
The proper way is described below:

So I went back under the hood to adjust my tps... and I'm not getting a reading between the e2 and idl terminals. At the lowest ohm setting on my multimeter, 200, it flashed something really low (can't seem to remember right now) and @ 2k and 20K no reading... so I assume I screwed up originally and tested it wrong. my new question is, would a bad tps throw a check engine light, or just go out with only an idle problem to indicate? I don't want to spend $100 on this part and not have it help, I'm unsure as what to do. Any helpl on the c.e.l. question is greatly appreciated.

you could check your Idle Air Control valve also. i think if it is stuck open it will cause a high idle. vacuum leaks cause high idles. i think the tps will give you cel only if it goes completely out.

I think that the ECU only detects a short on the EDL-E2 circuit, but not 100% sure on that. All that signal tells the ECU is that the throttle is closed (at idle) and if that contact never closes, as far as the ECU is concerned, the throttle has not been closed. So it might be the TPS IDL-E2 contact strip is bad or just that the idle position has not been properly adjusted.

unless I'm reading everything wrong, don't you need the idl-e2 terminals to properly adjust?
I did the allen head screw replacement that was suggested, so I can go in and try every position under the sun, I think I'm gonna buy the damn sensor and hope it works out for me.

bought a new tps, dropped the idle some, (1250) probably not adjusted right, but the truck smells really bad (exhaust). It never smelt great, but it is potent now. I'm sure I'll have to replace the cat amongst other items to smog it. I've come to realize that I'm dense and can't seem to follow directions on how to properly adjust the tps, I'm counting on my brothers help tomorrow to get it done right, fingers crossed.
