Hi, I recently bought a 1986 Toyota 4x4 Pickup, 5 speed, and after I start the truck and let it idle, I get a rattling noise that sounds like its coming from the bottom front of the engine. It doesn't rattle until after it warms up, but it's beginning to worry me. The truck drives and feels perfectly fine. It's a wierd noise that sounds like something is just loose and rattling against something, but I don't know alot about engines, so I honeslty don't know what to look for. Any help would be great.

most of the time thats the timing chain hitting against the water jacket. When was the timing chain done last? Odd that it would happen only when warmed up, but I still think its time for a new chain/guides.

PS don't drive it when it does that. The next thing you'll know there will be coolant in oil, and then that gets really bad. The point is if you fix it now, it'll be cheaper than putting it off.

The person I bought it from told me the timing chanin was recently done. Of course this is just them saying that. How diffiult is it to replace it, or is it somehting that needs to be done in a shop?

A shop would be your best bet if it is the timingchain. It is not an easy task if you no little about engines.

If I was you, and I no a good shop, I would take it to them to check it out. If it is a new timing chain as the person told you, maby something isn't put back together right.

But as stated above, it sounds like a timeing chain issue to me as well.

Usually the left tchain guide breaks. There is a way to replace just the guide without pulling everything apart and doing the whole thing if thats what it is

Ok, I talked to the person I bought it form, and this time I was told they never replaced the timing chain, so I've made an appointment to get it looked at by a local shop. Thanks for the help guys. As far as not driving it for now, it's not really an option. I'll just take it really easy on it and hope nothing bad happens for now.

worst case your timing chain snaps and you're stranded. the 22re aren't interference engines so you won't bend a valve or anything. even if the water jacket wears through a complete timing rebuild kit is only about $200 from engnbldr, including chain/sprockets/pumps/gaskets and timing cover. drive her till she explodes!

Haha, I've been there! Usually you need a new chain, guides and gears. In my case I needed a new front cover also. (timing cover) I was lucky and was able to leave the truck in auto shop at school, and work on it myself. Try ENGNBLDR.com I got everything for waaay cheaper than autoparts stores and definitely cheaper than the stealership! Should be called a timing kit. Email Ted and he is very quick with a response.

Try adjusting your valves first, I had that same noise and feared the worst, but I adjusted the valves and it's since gone away (guides were great, checked that when I had the head off a couple months ago).

The 22re eng IS an interferance motor. You will bend valves if it breaks. More than likely you have a broken tchain guide and need a valve adj

Just picked up a timing kit from Ted at ENGNBLDR. Got it for $112 shipped to my door, so I guess it's a good deal since someone else said it was around $200. This included an aluminim timing cover. When I get it and install it, I'll check on the noise and repost for anyone that may have this same problem.
