Noob looking to buy a 98 or 99 4Runner
Hey guys, I've been looking around this forum for awhile now. I love everybody's rigs. I am just about to graduate college and I'm looking for a new car. I've always loved 4Runners, and since my car is on its last leg (or wheel...) I figure it's about time to upgrade. I drive a Toyota now, so I know they are dependable. As far as I can tell the 4Runners are dependable and low maintenance. But what I need to know is if there are any weak spots in the design or engineering of the car. Is there something that I should be aware of when I'm looking at a possible 4R to purchase? Problem parts that are expensive to replace or what not. I'm going to be careful to make sure if it's over 90,000 MI the previous owner has replaced the timing belt. I had one of those snap on me and it was over $1200 to fix!! Any advice or insights would be much appreciated! Thanks so much!

i've been told to check that the rear axle seal is not leaking. and i believe it's not so damaging if the timing snaps with these trucks.
i'm thinking of buying a 98 myself.

This maybe a stupid question, but what's the difference between the base model and the SR5 model? The limited is much more luxurious right?

If you get a '98, make sure it's Anthracite.
But the '99 is a bit better looking, and has better headlights and cupholders.
If you're doing 4wd, try to get the rear diff. lock. It's a button on the dash to the left of the steering column.
'99 Limiteds had a better 4wd but are expensive.
If the timing belt snaps, the valves don't collide. No engine damage, but the truck obviously won't run.

I'm looking for a Limited, but abotu $10k is all I can afford. Also, I wish i could do 4x4, but after checking the insurance company, it'd be 30% more every 6 months! oh well... maybe next time.
