Hi i need some advice on what to do next. I just pulled the head on my 22re from a 95 pickup and had it vacuum tested and cleaned. Valves are good and seats are good as well. I do not know what to do next.

Background is i had a bad misfire and then found out it was only running on 3 cylinders. Figured it was a bad valve so i pulled the head and everything checked out. What next? Piston rings? Did a compression test and had 111, 0, 120, 111....pretty low right?

Most of the time its a bad valve that's not seating properly. if its a high millage engine it might be your rings! if the head did check out ok and they were seating properly then it is your rings! and if thats the case, then i would suggest pulling the motor buy a overhaul kit for 22re and rebuild your motor. if you do..... research really good on specs! it can make or break you!

Ya the head checked out ok, so im worried it could be the rings. If i was a bad ring wouldnt i still get some compression though? Plus im not really burning alot of oil? Is there anything else that could cause no compression?

how did you preform your compression test? Even when I had 2 pistons with cracked rings and lands I still had 15-20psi in those cylinder. Your compression numbers did seem a bit low. Seems to me they should be around 145. Sounds like its time for a re-ring anyways.

The only place your compression can go is out the valves, the rings, the head gasket or the plug hole.

Just because your rings arn't sealing properly doesn't mean you'll burn lots of oil There are the 2 rings that supply compression, and the other 2 rings that supply oil sealing.

Did you do a wet AND a dry compression test?

For the compression test i got the engine to operating temp, took out all of the plugs and tested each one at full throttle with about 6 cranks. It was a dry test though i did not perform a wet test cause i figured it was a burnt valve due to the 0 compression in only the one cylinder. I should have done a leakdown test but now the head is already off!

So then after learning that the valves very seating properly and i figured it had to be a bad ring so i took some tranny fluid and put it in the valves. Turns out cylinder 2 (one with no compression and not firing) has a very slow leak if any. and cylinder 3 drained all the way.

Im pretty stumped right now and im not sure what to do next. Head gasket looked fine no cracks or holes. valves are seating properly and the ring seems ok on 2. Any ideas??

if the cylinder is slightly egged or tappered it will act like bad rings I would use a bore dial gauge or inside and outside mic and put the piston at the bottom of the cylinder and check for egg shape and tapper of the cylinder on all of them
