Multiple cracks to start in the morning 87 22re SR5

Hello I'm a newb. The sight is great. I've googled problems with Blue and alot of the time this is where the answers are. Blue has just under 170K MI and is pretty much stock with a K&N air filter. I have done some searching and just haven't found the problem I am looking for. I'm in So Cal and park in a garage so Temp in the morning aren't the problem. When I got the truck ,94' 85k MI, the fuel gauge worked, and I would turn the key and it would pop off. I changed the fuel filter ,shortly after getting the truck, gauge stopped working unless its full and it would take a couple of turns to start. Now, in the A.M. I turn 2 to 3 times for 5 to 6 seconds each time before it kind of sputters to life. Once, I give it some gas and back out it seem like the choke is working 'cause it will be idling at about 900 RPM. Once it is warm and I shut er down, it will fire back up fairly quick but it will idle at about 500 and be a bit erratic instead of the normal 750. A quick tap o' the gas and its fine. I changed the FF last week, 1st time since The 94' change, my bad, I'm trying to get on top of Ole Blue, need her about another 5 years, and when I depressurized it died after 3 to 4 second. I had expected it to run longer than that. It seems to run fine on the open road. In need to get this puppy smog in about 10 Days and I have a feeling this is more than just a fuel pump issue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone also suggest a decent, not cheap but not top o' the line, code reader. BTW, have never had a check engine light in the 6 yrs I've own Blue.
Thank you for any help.

so you have already changed the fuel filter, i would suggest you do a complete tune up, plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor. It would also be a good idea to clean the throttle body. also if the 02 sensor is very old or is the original one, it would be a good idea to replace it also.

I did a tune up and cleaned the K&N Memorial day weekend, Used Bosch platinum plus plugs. Replaced valve cover gasket and dialed in my cooling system 4th of July weekend, stock 88c stat, new OEM radiator and hoses in April. Last weekend I did the exhaust manifold gasket. Yesterday, I did replaced the plugs with NGK BPR5EY and put in a bosch O2 sensor. Now, the idle is definitely more erratic. Anywhere from 500 and sputtering to 850, and sometimes it will be at 750 and slowly drop off to about 600. I believe the sensor was the original yellow plug. I'm going to try to buy the correct ND part, but on sight I went to had at least 8 ND sensors the one I pulled out has 2 numbers on it. 89465-12030 and 065500-0222. Does anybody know what the erratic idle is about? Any suggestion on a diagnostic meter/code reader?

Bosch = junk.
Replace that sensor with an OEM one.

I don't know the part number, I always just call my guy at the dealership and he gets it to me in minutes - all they need is your VIN.

Check out Underdog Racing Development - great people and have everything you'd ever need including O2 sensors.

Fink. I put my 23 year old original in and returned the bosch , it runs better with the old one, and ordered a denso P/N 234-1051 for $57.00. I just can't swallow the $188.00 the dealer wants. Doing these things does make it run better, but not start better. Any advice? Thanks.

*not sure if this is valid for a 22RE*

Sure can. A 2" piece of good, solid 16 gauge wire or a paper clip. I'm serious, I've done it myself. Jump the two ports on the diagnostic block (TE and E1 or something... someone help me out). Jump them, turn the key and read the blinks. Works like a champ.

Talk to TruckFiend he had the EXACT same problem.

Turned out his cold start injector timer switch was busted, which caused it to start hard just the same way you are describing.
