I found a 1986 parts pickup that has a bad ring and pinion gear. I would like to know what I could do to tow it with a dolly with the front wheels on the dolly. Could I remove the ring and install the carrier? Or is it safe to lock front wheels remove driveline and tow with with the rear wheels on the dolly?

I would buy a 3rd take it with you and drive the truck home. if your towing with the fronts on the ground don't lock the hubs.

how does the rear sound coasting in neutral? how bad is the R&P? How far do you need to tow it?

as long as the diff bearings and axle bearings are decent, you should be able to just disconnect the driveshaft or put the t-case in neutral - that way there's no load on the R&P. That's only if it'll still freewheel or coast good . . . If the bearings are toast though, you won't want to go that route.

Lock the front steering is what I should have said. Truck does not run. I need to tow it about 200 miles. I have not seen the carrier so I do not know how bad the R&P are. Could I just build a cover and fill the differential with oil and leave the carrier out?

If it is a bad rear, yes you can tow the truck with the front wheels on the ground rear on the dolley with hubs in neutral. the steering wheel should lock with the key removed. If not chain the crap out of it and check it often.

If it is a bad front than no issue with the front wheels on the dolley.
