Coolant Exploded, now car overheats badly?

Was driving on a fairly long roadtrip, engine coolant reservoir cap explodes off and coolant goes everywhere. I filled the radiator back up, got back fine but just tonight I drove her back from a friends place and its sizziling and gurgling with the temp gauge in the red.

Im thinking possible bad water pump, any ideas?

i'm not sure if that's the head gasket problem or not (MANY threads about it) but DEF. DO NOT LET IT OVERHEAT anymore than it has. If you have a 3.0 v6 (i'm guessing) you'll warp the aluminum heads if you haven't already.
Look in your reservoir and see if it is overly dirty or black'ish looking. If so, you're HG went and you're leaking oil into your coolant.
Did you fill the reservoir to the "full" line or all the way to the top?

p.s. anytime you're asking for advice, mention what you are driving and what engine it has. or you could put your vehicle specs in your signature like many ppl do.

Your cap did not just blow off and your radiator spew out all of it's fluid because it was bored. Something caused it happen. Filling it back up is not going to fix the original issue. I've never seen a water pump fail without a leak to follow it. Do you have any leaks? Do you have steam coming out of your tailpipe? If you have a 3.0 I'm afraid you may have joined the blown headgasket club.

It could be the thermostat is stuck closed. A head gasket wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary for the 3.0, but it can't hurt to hope for something easy.

Thanks guys, its a 3slow 1993 4runner auto, and there are minor oil leaks to add to the equation.

Red face

Curious did heat up over a long time as you watched the temp gauge climb or happen all of a sudden.

Had you checked the coolant level in the last couple of days before this.

I can`t think anyone would drive a overheated vehicle except for combat damage in a ambush.

Do you have a pressure tester to check the cooling system??
