Do it, then get bigger tires when money allows.

Sounds great for an off-road only rig, but freeway rpm's are gonna be really high. 4.88's are the typical ratio for 33's.

5.71's and 33's are going to be a tad tall. I'm running 285's (33.4's) and 5.29's and my rpms at 80mph are just under 3500.

Buy it and try to source a front end to match. Then install them and run it.... and then go with some 35's and have a freaking blast!!

400 bones is a good price, but you may waste 400 when you find it too frustrating to find another third with matching gears. And slow down, speedracer! Those gears are a bit tall for 33's, as others may have said.

save your 400 and put it towards a batmobile, or an engine swap, or towards a pair of 3rds

5.71 is too low for 33's with 5 spd. 4.88 is what you want. Look for Auto stock with 31's...they came with 4.88.
Having said that, the 4.88 ring and pinion can not be use with Detroit locker if I remember correctly.
Yes, You do need to change both diff. or no 4wd.

btw, the terminology for too tall is actually lower number ratio. low is the description for higher number ratio. Ex. 4.88 is taller than 5.71 and lower than 4.10. ...

Some of them are. Check out the link below, if you dig through it you can find all of the gearing codes etc.

6cyl autos with the tow package generally came with 4.88:1 gears. This can be verified by the G144 code on the door sticker.

5.71's are horrible gears. the pinion is way too small to be strong. if your going to romp on them youll probably braek them. if it were me and wanting low gears i would look for some, 5.29's.

If I had the choice again and drove the hwy less, I'd have 5.29s with tall 33s (or find some 34s) instead of 4.88s. I loved the extra torque of having 4.88s with 31" tires, especially with single t-case offroad. Plus, the next natural progression is to upgrade from 33s to 35s...

Not necessarily. Zuk's opinion on the subject.

x2 if your going to be rockcrawling the thing i suggest 5.29s as the highest gears.

Everyone has their person opinion on what will break what.

Personally, I won't go over 4.88's.

Check this website, which will give you a starting point for your RPM's:

i went form stock gears to 4.88s with 31 inch tires and they were great ..felt better than stock...with more mods(4.7.1 t-case gears) i wanted more low gearing at the axles....i installed yukon 5.29s and got a set of 33-12.50-15 bfg muds for free(1/4 tread left) and tried them out......everything worked great......i then ended up buying a set of 36-12.50-15 super swamps.....the 5.29s still worked great......i dont drive the runner on the hwy much so im not sure where im at as far as top end but ive heard nothing good about 5.71s...

I run 37" tires with my 4.88 gears, and they are perfect.

The 33's were too tall a gear for my setup, though it sucked going up hills. I have a little more power now though with my 3.4L
