4th Gen 4Runner-FJ 40 transfer case swap
I am a new member and must say this forum has some great info. I have an 03 4Runner- the biggest drawback to me is that Toyota does not offer a locking rear diff in this model and you turn a button to activate the 4WD . Has anyone tried swapping a center diff from a 2007 FJ into a 4Runner, and then cutting a hole in the floor for the shifter? I know it sounds like a lot of work but I'd sure be interested in knowing whether it can be done.
Thanks!

Nope not here. How about just getting the Atlas 4 speed transfer case instead? It replaces the stock transfer case and for the same size you get ultra low gears for rock crawling

Wouldn't mind doing this myself actually but obviously the costs takes me out right away.

Okay, your title says 40, but the post says 07 FJ. I'm assuming you're talking about an 07 FJ.
For the record, you DO NOT want the 40 case. It is a 1 piece unit, and it works okay in 40s behind the stock straight 6's, but they will break open with too much power being pushed through them.
I will second the Atlas 4 speed. You get hi, low, low low, and really low low. Another great benifit is that it is cable shifted, so you can mount that bad boy, if you wish, in the cab, with only a wire coming through the floor. Plus, its just a sexy beast.

Thank you Good Times and AxleIke. I looked up the Atlas 4 speed- nice set up but that's a whammy of a price tag. I guess I'll hold off until I win the lottery! Anyone had any problems with their 4th Gen transfer cases? I bought some water proofing tape with foil-type material on the back. For now, I'll just wrap the harness going to the transfer case with that to try and avoid any shorts during water crossing, etc.

no problem and btw, welcome aboard!
I personally wouldn't mind testing out the atlas if it fell in my lap (hint hint for anyone out there! hehe).
As for water crossings, I've seen many 4th gens make it across with no problems so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I like it because all you have to do is hot wire it for 2WD low range.
As for the rear diff. Get a selectable locker and go wheel.
