Yopar Project

Hey everyone, I bought an '87 4Runner a few months ago with 310k on it... My first Toyota... I'm also a Mopar guy with a quick slant six valiant running mid 15's in the 1/4...

Here's some pics of the truck... clean and rust free from FL, well used and a little tired... so I decided on a rebuild for the 22re here at the garage. The motor was put together at my friend Chad's.. I chose the 261c cam and rest of kit was from engbldr too.. .020 over on the pistons... local crank kit .010/.010, fresh rebuild on the head with stock valves and 3 angle seats... I can't wait to get it fired up.. I do have a question though, about the gasket for that little water pipe in the last pic shown here...

... is this gasket supposed to be a rubber O-ring? I can't remember what it was... There is a copper flat jobber that might go in there, but I don't think that's the right one.. Thanks and I'll post more pics and info on how she runs soon...

PS--- that's Chrysler Blue on the block... cuz these motors are known to be tough...and they DO have a Hemi chamber....

Yes, it is a rubber O-ring. Be sure to scrape out all the crusty stuff before re-installing it with a new O-ring

Thanks man, I appreciate it. The only other O ring I had went on the distributor, that might have been the one for the water pipe.. anyway, I'll head to Ace Hardware to pick another one up, I also need a helicoil for the back of the intake manifold (EGR pipe)...

Hemi Head

Yo, the combustion chamber is shaped like 1/2 of a hemisphere, with the spark igniting in the center, and the intake and exhaust coming in on the sides. It's the closest we can get to perfect combustion in a petrol engine. The absolute perfect explosion and distribution of power would be, I think, within a whole sphere, with the spark coming from the center of the sphere and distributing outward; but that's impossible when you have to push a piston in one direction, so the Hemi design is the best we can do. The Japanese were smart in using this design in the 22r. Someone else can probably add to this info and explain more, but that's the jist of it. Here's a link if you want to see a graphic to help visualize it. http://classichemi.com/hemiwhat.shtml

hm, I posted an answer to your Hemi question a while ago but don't see it.. refreshed browser and all.. anyway, it's 1/2 a spherical combustion chamber shape.. a hemisphere shape... a very efficient design for a cylinder head...

Nice yota and 22re!

My first car was a 73 dart with a slant 6 I built up. I can't remember all of the specs now, but that is the only motor I would put above the 22re because of the cast iron head (i.e no head gasket leaks). Before the rebuild, my dad almost melted the motor on several occasions over broken belts and didn?t want to stop. Never did have any trouble with it either. Tough motor indeed!!!

There is a more efficient combustion design then the Hemi, IMHO, its called mazda wankel rotary :-D. It just wont be perfect untill they can develope a durable enough apex seal to handle such a high power output form such a small engine

yo,
That O ring is a special design by Yota. I STRONGLY suggest you get the exact one from Toyota dealer. If your ACE hardware O ring leaks, replacing that gasket is a MF once in the truck because its in a bad place and pipe is secured to the back of the head. Been there, done that.....

Very nice 4Runner. Great to see another Mopar guy around here with a 4Runner. I just got rid of my other Runner around a year ago. 1974 RoadRunner with a 360. I miss it
