I run 85 regular...and I've got a supercharger! I don't go WOT too often, but when I do, I don't notice any pinging. And I don't care if she blows--I want to do a rebuild, anyway.

If you're getting spark knock or pinging, raising the octane is usually an easy fix.

Since it was brand new my truck has pinged on anything less than 91. Rather than make Toyota rewrite the owners manual, I have just always run premium.

Right now I have other issues that are making it ping even worse, and I am still running premium to offset some of that.

I'm not going to put my timing at 0 degrees to stop the knock and have ants run along beside my truck on the freeway...

It's kind of ridiculous for someone who's truck runs fine on 87 to say that it's a waste of money to run premium in a truck that doesn't run fine on low octane fuel. Is it that hard to believe that different situations require different solutions?
I mean in a normal situation. There is no gain to be had in a non pinging motor by using anything other than 87 octane. If your pinging of course, its an entirely different sotry, I didnt mean to offend.

You don't need to have forced induction to require a higher octane fuel. If your 22RE's timing is set at the stock setting with a stock engine, 87 will do just fine. But in cases of advanced timing for hp gains (it works) your engine is still stock but will now reguire a higher octane fuel. From my experence 8 degrees advanced will ping on 87 but not on 89. There is a very noticeable hp gain from just advancing timing and running a higher octane fuel.

On the 1992 4runner manuel it say 91 (premium ). I notice a diffrent from 87 to 91 and the compression on these 3vze are 170 psi each cylinder. Just don't use SHELL gasoline I don't know what they use in there gasoline, it cause a missfire or even hesitating when you press on the gas pedal.
