first thing i did was remove the air box and the battery

after that i pulled the AFM connection from the wire loom.
it reaches just fine.

next i capped off the hole on the air box that goes to the intake silencer, and put a filter on the other end

after that i mounted a cheap battery tray and ran the new cables in front of the radiator to the other side and tied in to the existing cables there.
after that i installed the battery.

had to improvise on the radiator overflow, the battery tray wouldnt fit with it especially when i moved the battery towards the left side to deal with a hood clearancing issue. when i come up with a better container for the overflow i will switch it out.
next was the intake tubing. i found some flexible tubing at the parts store and it looked much easier to use instead of hunting through the plumbing section of a home improvement store.

you can see the ac lines made it a bit difficult to route. you can also see the wire loom i added in that shot. i thought i was done after that but it wouldn't start because i had forgotten to plug in the ignition coil after taking the AFM wiring out of its loom. it still wouldn't start, and i eventually found the cause to be my AFM i had bent two contacts that sent power to the fuel injectors when air is flowing. i shouldnt have taken it apart.. lesson learned but luckily i was able to fix it after cutting the silicone seal to the black cap on the afm.
you can see the two far left contacts are the ones i had bent. after i sealed it up with blue rtv it worked perfectly.

here is the finished product.
it seems to have much better throttle response after this mod, it is louder with the silencer removed, but you could just as easily left it in if it bothers you that much. eventually i may build a custom air box and run a snorkel similar to bigbluepile, but for now this is done

It looks to me like you put more of a restriction into your air intake then stock.

Are you getting ready for a 3.4 Swap??

I wasnt crazy about the bends i had to make to go around my ac lines, but i still felt a noticeable improvement. i am not getting ready for a 3.4 swap. i wouldnt dream of undertaking that unless i seriously screwed up my 22re. When i build a new airbox and run a snorkel i will try and come up with a better way around the lines. i was thinking of running it with the afm upside down like this
it has less bends that way. i have heard that it may not be good to mount it upside down, but ive seen someone else do it before. my only thought about doing it like this is if i am running the stock air box any water that gets into the box will go through the filter and drain straight into the AFM, and that would likely mess it up pretty fast if water got in.
Any thoughts about the upside down configuration?

Im going to have to redo my battery tray/hold down. turned a corner to sharp and the positive terminal slid into the fender with a shower of sparks.

I agree though there seems to be a lot of extra tubing...

you have chosen to run those cables in a dangerous way. The positive isn't protected which you found out. It should be loomed all the way. If you're gonna just run one wire over like that, go to a marine shop and pick up isolated terminals something like this

Curious because I'm interested in this swap because of the long run between AFM and throttle body meaning more possibility of leaks (hence, error readings) between AFM and Throttle body, and the duct that runs to close to the radiator..
Your AFM is now rotated 180 degrees with respect to original.
How about the stock air box? Also rotated 180 degrees so its intake opening is still facing the engine, or did you just slide it over so the intake opening now faces the fender?
Where do you take your intake air from now? From inside the engine compartment, or do you have penetration into the fender like 4crawler did?

Agree with ^^^ on long ducting. Also, need a grommet on that opening that the red battery cable runs through.

I thought the point of this mod was to reduce the length of the intake tube. It seems like you've introduced more "backpressure" than stock with this setup?

My intake tubing is still shorter than stock. I want to make a custom airbox and snorkel like bigbluepile did, but due to lack of funds and time i reused the stock airbox with this constraint it was more difficult to go around my A/C lines. However i still noticed an improvement with the non optimal curves. I have also addressed my battery cable issues. i will upload pics shortly.

I didnt realize you were selling your box. I found another solution. cost me about tree fiddy.
looks like we have the same filter too logan. my dollar store tupperware will work just fine i hope once i modify the lid to seal much better. plus the entire lid will come off instead of a deck plate. fixed my battery tray with a scrapwood spacer to make it a better fit.

also i turned the battery around so the negative is on the fender side. less likely to have issues.
hopefully i can find the terminal cover i had on before the swap and reinstall it.
next up i have to get that hole cut and run it behind the fender. i will worry about the seal of the box after i get the rest done.
