Stock alternator or upgrade for dual battery setup.

I'm planning on doing a dual battery setup and I was wondering if I should stick with a stock 60amp alternator or get a local shop to get a stock alternator and upgrade it. I'm currently in need of a new alternator and I wanted to ask before I bought one. Also I know the stock alternator is 60 amp,I found a 70amp is that worth getting? If I get a local company to rebuild an alternator what specs should I get them to build it too. What amps a Idle ect... I just didn't know if it would be worth it or not.

I will be pairing this with an Optima yellow top battery.
This alternator is going on my 88' Black Death DD/mallcrawler/recovery/adventure vehicle haha, any help would be apreciated!

i'm not all that familar with alternators, but i'd say if it's possible, get 'em to upgrade it to where it puts out about 100 amps or more...and i'd guess that at least 70-80 amps at idle would help out a good bit with those 2 yellow tops...

LC engineering makes a good one, pricey but it puts out about 100 amps at idle, and about 140 amps at driving rpms. That's the one I plan on buying, LC doesn't screw around. If you run 2 yellow tops you want to make sure they stay charged because they are a biotch to bring back from the dead.

Boyle's future tech does a good upgrade on the 5VZFE alt, don't know about 3VZ though. Call and ask (530) 888-6290 They took my stock 5VZ 80 amp alt and made it 96 amps at idle and 166 amps max.

For mine it was $167.44 total. That included $10.57 for one new bearing they said didn't look too good, $31.95 for an upgraded rectifier, $66.70 for an upgraded Stator, $50 labor. and $8.22 shipping. My brushes were fine so they didn't replace them.

One tip, if you ship one to them be sure and double box it, pack it with good padding and ask them to return it double boxed. Mine had some shipping damage on the return trip (bent pulley and dented cover) Boyles took care of it though.

Yellow Tops are a deep cycle battery and made to drain and recharge. Done mine that way countless times. A couple hours on a battery charger and they are good to go.

I have a stock alternator and it does fine for charging dual batteries as it only charges one at a time with the Painless wiring kit regardless so I saw little point in upgrading the alternator. I actually have a triple battery setup using ao additional Marine switch.

If mine dies I will upgrade it perhaps but thus far it works fine.

On my diesel it has a 100 amp alternator and it has dual batteries stock. So if you can get the thing to do 100 amps it should do fine as that is what Toyota did stock.
