Steering Wheel Play

Steering Wheel Play
I looked and I didn't see a thread on this already so if there is already one posted my apologies.
However I am looking for some insight on what I would need to do to remove some play in my steering wheel. I have a 91 4runner and the play is between 10 - 12 on the steering and maybe not even that bad, but winter is approaching and I would like to get it fixed before the snow and ice come. Any advice would greatly appreciated even if it's redirecting to me another thread. Thanks guys.

What else have you confirmed that does not have play? Idler arm? Pitman arm? Ball joints? Tie rod ends? UCA & LCA bushings? Ball joints?

When adjusting a steering box do it a small increments . I have never adjusted a power steering unit ,but I have done manual boxes and it is easy to over tighten them.

I've adjusted mine. Which made a HUGE improvement. Wasn't too hard either. The trick to not overtightening is to stop when it no longer reduces the freeplay at the steering wheel. It's fairly easy to find the "just tight enough" spot, then tighten the nut down, and done.
IF you haven't just caused a PS fluid leak by doing this. Which happened to me. I found out the hard way that there's a rubber gasket under that nut keeping the thing sealed up tight. Damage that ever so slightly...and...well...don't say I didn't warn ya. Not to worry though. Fortunately, it IS one of those times when you can get away with RTV instead.
