Hey all, I have a 1987 4Runner with the 22RE with 180,000 miles. I am going to be moving from Colorado to Michigan in about 1 month. I just had my truck brought into a shop and they checked all the fluids for me and found that I had no transfercase fluid. I changed the rear output seal and I hope that will fix it. Are there any known parts that I should carry with me that might go bad along the long trip? I heard that the coil sometimes goes bad, whats the deal with that?

wouldnt worry too much about it. Might be worth getting the super AAA which'll give you free long distance tows if you break down. I think they'll do 80 mile tows up to 3 times a year, or 1 longer tow (200 miles maybe)

Hmm, I don't have the 22re but as with any vehicle it's wise to carry certain things with you. I change my belts & radiator hoses when I feel they need changed or if I have them off for another reason. I then keep a set that I removed as spares & carry them with me on long trips along with a air pump & tire plugs. Other than that check & replace the cap & rotor, plugs, wipers, filters, brake pads, tires (including the spare & it's lowering mechanism), lube the chasis & take along a tool kit. You already checked & replaced the fluids which is the other big thing; I always carry a jug of water with me in case of cooling problems. About the only other thing I can think of you might need on a remote stretch of road that is critical would be a headlight. If you picked up a spare it wouldn't likely be wasted money since you'll probably need one eventually anyway.

There aren't really any "parts" I can think of that would be more likely to fail & leave you stranded than any others. I mean, if your fuel pump goes out, your stuck...if your water pump fails, again...stuck...but how are you going to know ahead of time & carry spares without spending hundreds of dollars on unnecessary items? Just take the simple things like extra hoses, belts, fuses, fluids & be sure to inspect your tires including the spare & triple check your tool kit for completeness & ensure you have all your jacking tools as well.
