part out or sell whole? 94 sr5 4x4
with 192k my runner is about to throw a rod. it also needs a new clutch (5 speed). i don't want to put the money into a new engine before selling (just bought a 98 sr5 4x4) it's got a new power steering pump, brand new dakota defender 31x10.50 15 ATs. it's pretty much loaded, sun roof, power everything except seats. the interior is in great shape as is the rest of the truck. i have taken great care of it and if the engine work wasn't such a pain i would have done it, but was happy to purchase this 98. anyway, i'm really trying to get the most money out of it and am not sure of the demand for parts and how much of a pain it is to strip and send to the buyers. i would appreciate any input from those that have parted out their trucks. great forum, lots of info here, thanks

I say if you feel comfortable rebuilding an engine, why not do it? If you can do all the work yourself, the rebuild won't put you too much in the hole as far as at the end of it having a rig that is sellable as a whole. The PITA you put into rebuilding the engine will pay for itself over trying to part out a perfectly viable rig (as you describe it - minus engine that needs work). You could sell it with a rebuilt motor. Or maybe you could try selling it "as is" for a few weeks and if nothing happens there, rebuild the motor or part it out. Comes down to what your expectations are at the end of the day as far as $$$.

How do you know it's about to throw a rod?
I just parted out most of a 2nd gen - there's plenty of people out there who want all parts of it. If you don't mind the work/time, you can expect to sell all of it off, and probably make more money in the end!

from the 4runner I parted out with my buddy we got about 400$ out of it and still have stuff we have not been able to sell I say sell it as a whole or fix and sell other wise you get stuck with a hassle.

Just my .02, I think it would be easier to rebuild the engine that to screw around with parting out the truck, which involves advertising, removing parts, dealing with a widely variable public, and ultimately disposing of the unsold.
