is this normal?

I started doing a tune up today. It quickly became much more then I planned on getting into. I pulled the throttle body inorder to do a do the throttle position sensor alignment. The back of the throttle plate was covered in a 1/8th inch of black crud. I ended up pulling the upper intake off. The whole thing is full of sludge. I've got 250k on the motor so I was expecting some carbon build up. I wasn't expecting oily sludge. Should I be concerned? Anything else I should check?

No, its the legendary black goo. I had it in my intake too. I just used some carb cleaner to clean it all off. I think it has something to do with the EGR

thanks bleeder. Your picture look exactly like mine. I'm having the same problems you did. I found the allen bolt just as it was getting dark. I still cann't get my lower intake off. I'll work on it tommorrow when there is light.
My local machine shop quoted me 30 bucks for hot tanking and bead blasting. I'm going to go the easy way and get it really clean. If it comes out discolored I'll paint it.

When I pulled the injectors one of them was not like the others. Seems strange to me. My cold start injector was completely blocked by the crap. I'm thinking about sending my injectors out to be cleaned. Anyone done this is it worth it?

That's odd? the 3 that are the same are similar to mine, but the other one looks like it's out of a different Toyota maybe... Did it run fine otherwise, and no leaks from it where it met up with the manifold?

Or brake cleaner!

I cleaned mine out as much as i could, including the throttle body. Much better throttle response.

No leaks. Just odd.

I have really good performance at the low end. I also have really good throttle responce. I have no high end and horrible gas milage. 5 speed with 4:10 and 33's. I max out a 65 miles an hour on flat ground. I really can only use first through third gears.

The injectors are kind of gummed up to so I'm planning on replacing them with remans. I've found what looks like a good deal. Is there any differance between the 87 and 88 injectors?
