See if they'll ship to ya...

I think this is what you want...I'm not 100% on this.

napa online shows reman half shaft for $54 + $11 core. you have a napa in powell river. call and see what they can do for ya on your side of the border. above is us$

do the half shaft. much easier, no grease and clamp b.s. to mess with.

should be able to do it with the bottle jack. once you pull the tire, bring it to rest on a concrete block if you don't have a jack stand. but hey, a 2 ton floor jack and jack stand combo is pretty cheap these days you may want to invest now. don't leave it on just the bottle jack.

you can do it if you have the tools including socket for the axle nut. good luck.

here's another write up, specific to 3rd gen but same principle:

That $190 was the local Napa believe it or not. I will look into ordering one online, hopefully I can get one shipped for cheap.
I do have jackstands, but not the axle socket...Guess I should price out all the crap I need and see how close that comes to the shop price.

Thank you all so much for the replies tho.

I do recommend redoing the bearing but...it's not necessary to do it. You should though...If you do not have the socket and don't want to spend the extra cash on it you "should" be alright.

you may be able to "rent" that socket from auto parts store as well. refundable deposit upon return. check into that.

if that's the increase in price because you're in canada that is b.s. sorry, man.
try fleabay. but definitely get the half shaft. both cv's in one, already sealed. they're out there for under $100.

rockauto shows they ship world wide. this is their listing on fleabay US, not CA:

Well guys, thanks again. I have decided to go the shop route since I gotta pay a $#!T load for the part and gotta buy extra stuff and tools to boot. Plus I dont have the confidence to do it myself, or a good space to do it. I gotta fix this thing asap for work and what not. My dad offered some financial help so thats a huge relief and a nice suprise.

I wouldent mind some opinions for replacing just the boots for the other side tho, is it the same amount of work anyway? I figure I may as well since they have age cracks.

it's always easier to replace the half shaft. boots suck. they make "split boots" to avoid shaft removal; they are a joke. they do work, but it's like trying to make a pb&j sammich w/o the pb touching the j. and prices are so low on shafts, new joints are worth buying.

the upside to this is, you can call around for prices. any shop should be able to give you a quote over the phone to replace a passenger side half shaft. and you know that these axles don't cost them much since we told you what prices are online, so if someone quotes you something absurd for the part, you know they're jerkin' your chain.

good luck bro!
