How to fix horn - 88 runner

My horn started doing weird stuff where it would only work when the wheel was aligned a certain way. Eventually it just stopped working, so I got around to fixing it. This should take about 15 minutes of actual work. It takes longer pulling out tools and putting them back then actually fixing this.

This is one method of fixing it, but other forum members suggest that you should just change out the plunger. The plunger cost about $6. -$7. With this fix, you only need three small washers.

First, remove the screw that is located here.:

Here is the picture from behind:

Then you slide the steering wheel cover upwards:

Remove this cable:

You will then have to remove the steering wheel. To remove you have loosen this bolt, which is a 19mm. Before loosening, make sure that your wheels are pointing straight and you may want to put a mark on the bolt thingy to make sure that you put the steering wheel back in straight when you are finished:

I removed the steering wheel with a harmonic balancer that I got a cheap parts store fro about $5. But you can also try to hit the steering wheel from behind with a mallet or something of that sort.

When you remove the steering wheel lay it upside down on the floor. Remove the three screws, and pull out the copper ring thing. Then just add a washer under each of the screws.

Now just reinstall everything.

So far my horn has been working for about a month, and it works great. Beep beep!

great little write-up. for those who haven't pulled a steering wheel, it's nice to have a visual of what you're about to tear into.

i will tack on this extra bit of information: if you want to swap a newer steering wheel in to replace this 80s style as pictured, you will most likely find that the copper ring pictured above has a slightly different inner diameter.

i put a later 4Runner wheel in my truck (3 spoke) and found i had to double up the copper rings, new and old together, with some snipping to fit. But it can be done. everything else is same.

My 88's never done that. It did start squeeling real bad though. So I hit it with some dielectric grease and it's been quiet ever since. Hint, hint...
