help 7mge

I am considering doing the 7mge swap into my 88 auto 3vz 4runner. I already spent more than I will admit to rebuilding my 3vz and the head still continues to leak.
while I continue to research on my own could someone tell me the answer to these questions:
1. is the swap from the 3vz to the 7mge any hard than the swap from the 22re to the 7mge
2. can I still use my auto tranny?

1. yes, in that you have to make your own engine mounts but thats not hard for anybody that has any fabrication experience to do

2. not that I am aware. Rob from supracharged is producing a bellhousing to go from a 7M to an R series 5spd but I don't think it will work for autos. I'm a 5spd only kinda guy but check out supracharged.com, theres lots of info there in the website and forum

One of two things will happen, I will die, or the truck will be finished. I'm not sure which will be first.

I think the reason the 22RE to 7M swap is more popular is because of the bell housing. The 7M just bolts right up to the tranny you might run into a problem with the auto, unless you can find a 22RE auto to use instead.

How you checked out www.supracharged.com? They'd be your best bet for info.

Pirate4x4 also has quite a bit of info on it, a few guys have done it there.

on 4Wheeler.ca a guy did a really go write up of a 7MGE swap into an 87 4Runner

Good luck!

almost true, you have to have the 7MGE bellhousing as well to mate to the W56, but after that it is a bolt up affair and it what I'm using till my R151 arrives (fingers crossed)

From what I gather, the R154 trans is not the same as any of the other R series trans. You have to use a W or G series trans behind the 7mge bellhousing.

There is actually a guy on Pirate right now doing a 7MGTE swap. For a tranny he's using a hybrid R154-150 tranny. An R150 Tranny with the R154 gear set, everything works and the 150 housing lets you run a t-case. Not entirley sure what he's doing about the bell housing.

He has a longer input shaft so he can now use a stock 7M-GTE-R154 bellhouse. But he will be stuck with supra gear ratio so that means a 'longer' first gear. Or lower ratio whatever it's called.

You could purchase my old hybrid bellhouse. Not needed any more after 4 years of service since the 2JZ swap is done.

thanks for all of the info

In my reading I have found a couple of posts on the web that say the 7mge has the same type of head leak issue as the 3vz, is this true.

More about my situation:
trucks I own
1. 1987 4runner w/22ret in good working order, completely stock w/ all options and 143k no rust texas car

2. 1988 4runner w/rebuilt 3vz POS in ok working order w/leaking head I cannot seem to keep from leaking 10000.00 in stereo, 4000.00 in lift IFS, 2000.00 in rims and tires, 1500.00 in balljoints, bushings, and all steering components, and 1500.00 in new A/C fully loaded w/minor rust

BOTH NEED PAINT

should I bother with the 7mge swap or just use the 87 and switch everything over

will all of the a/c parts, namely the compresor fit the 22ret

I also need a TPS sensor and toyota only sells it with the throttle body for 750.00 any ideas

I'm not sure about head gaskets, I think it all depends on how you use the car.
My 7M-GE was still running when I swapped it for a 2JZ. More than 200.000km without a problem ever.
On the other hand; my 3VZE kept blowing gaskets, even when used mildly.
I doubt any of the accesories will fit without mods, except for the alternator which is a bolt on.
Why don't you just drive the 22r and take your time in swapping the 3VZE for a 7M? If you have time you can score parts sheap if you keep looking. I always do and this keeps my swaps cheap.

7M's blow headgaskets (mainly the 7MGTE's (turbo version)) because of the stock torque value on the headbolts. if you fix that, the motor is just about bulletproof.

pull the head, get the head and block lapped (silky smooth), put in a cometic MHG, torque it to 85ft lbs and you'll never have to worry about it again.

IMHO yes it is better to go 3.4 5vzfe. It is an easy swap in comparison and retains all accessory functions. The power and torque are very good too.
I just did one of my own and love it. See link. Also you can supercharger or turbo the 3.4 if desired.

That's the right question. Yes the 3.4 is a better idea. The swap is simple in comparison and retains all accesory function. I just finished one of my own in Dec. 06 and love it. PM me for link to my swap photos, etc. Better parts availability. Can supercharger or turbo the 3.4.
