Getting codes 3VZ
What is the procedure on pulling codes from a 1994 4Runner 3vz? Is is OBD I/II compliant? What tool to purchase? What are the various methods for getting codes?
Thanks for any assistance ...

you need to jump the diagnostic box under the hood. there is a label on the hood that will tell you which two slots to jump. all you need is a paper clip and then read the code sequence from the flashing CEL on the dash.

Procedure as follows:
Drive to Autozone. Park truck. Go inside and ask to have the codes read. Walk back to your truck with the (hopefully) friendly Autozone employee. Take notes. Drive back home, post codes on yotatech.com for assistance.
LOL, but seriously - no need to buy a reader IMHO.

Without having a > $6000 Vetronix Toyota specific scanner. It is impossible to scan/access/log/change Toyota OBD-I information.
You can get some of it by hand via the diagnostics ports. Jump TE1 to E1 for codes/diagnostic mode 1.
Turn the key to ON & jump TE2 to E1 to get Diagnostic mode 2 - which is hella sensative & will throw every code possible immediately when it's out of spec. I.E. you get every ignition code before you crank the engine, o2 codes before they warm up & if you're sitting still - hello wheel speed sensor & ABS codes.
No, Autozone can't scan OBD-I Toyota.

I'd heard OBDII started in late '92, right after my POS was made. I second taking it to Autozone. If you can't drive it, you can rent the reader for a refundable fee.

No.
The first OBD-II compliant engine in the world was the 1994 1mz-fe for the Camry platform. Even the 1997.5 3vz-fe's sold overseas were still OBD-I.
OBD-II was a mandated change for all vehicles 1996+.
Hence... Toyota swapped to the 5vz-fe which is OBD-II.
If you don't have a 5vz-fe, you're not OBD-II compliant, so minus Toyota/Lexus dealers, and a few Toyota specific INDY mechanics that can afford more than $6000 worth of scanning equipment.
So no... You can't scan a 3vz-anything with anything avalible to the people at autozone, or nearly anywhere else.

Maybe that was my OBD-II '96 Impala SS that I had scanned at Autozone...I'm entirely too young to be losing my mind like this...Sorry if it caused any confusion!
