I always get confused when it comes to gearing and tires, so im going to ask you guys that have more experiance with this for some help here.

In the next month or two I will be getting an all stock 86 4Runner with a manual transmission, and im guessing it has 4.10 gears. Right now it has 31x10.50 - 15 tires on it, and I want to know if these tires are to big for the stock gearing or should I go with smaller tires once I get it ?.

they are fine I think; my truck has 4.1 gears and ran 31's up until I went to 32's. I lost some pep with the 32's but most of that is due to much heavier wheels I'm guessing. Aluminum wheels and 31's will do well unless you need a hardcore crawler.

that being said, I also have a 3.4 behind 'em so 4.56 would be better for sure with a smaller motor. My runner with the veezy has 4.56's and it's more than adequate for 31's

You should search the spec for stock. The later 3.0 V6 with 31" came with 4.56.

I ran 31's for a short period on my '86 5spd with stock 4.10 gears. I didn't care for it. Looked cool and all that, but the 30 x 9.50's felt more nimble and snappier to me. Plus, 30's are easier in the hills.

I went from stock 225's to 31's and it was a dog I added 456's and it is wonderful. I think most people don't notice the loss because they have had 31's the entire time they have owned the truck.

My 1985 pickup has 31's, but it will only go 55 mph tops. Although, it does have welded diffs and an unknown gear ratio (Mainly due to me having bought the truck slightly pre-modded ). I was going to switch the diff gears out for 4.10, but perhaps 4.56 would be better? Of course, my truck also has an 80's Toyota diesel which has no gusto. Great mileage, but the power is lacking.

Normal mixed street/off highway drivability, with 22RE/3VZE engines + 5-speed trans =4.56. They put 4.88 in the A/T models.

My 88 re, 5sp with 4.10 and 31's is fine for all 'round driving. It does lose a little on hills, but nothing a downshift doesn't fix. If I'm on a trail or fire road and need more, which I often am when working, I stop, go in to lo in the xfer case and off it putts.
And 2500 rpms or so at 65 is nice on the ears and wallet.

The 4Runner is going to be my daily driver. Othere than driving in some snow and icy roads in the winter, it will be driven in town and on the highway.

but if you're looking to keep the speedometer about the same, here's what gears to use:

4.10: 28-30"
4:30: 31"
4.56: 32"
4.88: 33"
5.29: 35"

I have 4.10's with 30x9.5 and it drives like stock

I have 4.10's with 35 km2 on a 22re and in Tucson arizona and feel no need for a gear change haha sure sometime I have to downshift on a mountain but nothing beats cruising at 75 at like 2500

I got 529s with 33s.. goes fine and i love it. but ive ran 410s on 33 14.5 boggers on steel rims

I'm going to try the 4.30 gearing for my 31" and see how it does. Anyone know a good place to get gears for a good price?
